recyclingAs part of America Recycles Day 2014, Tompkins County is joining a statewide campaign to remind residents to donate all unwanted clothing, footwear, and other textiles, such as belts, purses, blankets, towels, sheets and pillowcases, and drapes.

On Thursday night, the County Legislature went on record demonstrating its strong support of this first-of-its-kind statewide campaign coordinated by several trade organizations to recover more textiles from the solid waste stream.

“In New York State alone, 1.4 billion pounds of textiles valued at $200 million are trashed each year, “ said Kat McCarthy, Tompkins County’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Specialist. “This campaign encourages residents to ‘clothes the loop’ by recycling their unwanted clothing and household textiles, and not throwing them away.”

On America Recycles Day (ARD), November 15th, and on November 16th, donations of clothing and textiles will be collected at each of the food scraps recycling drop spots in Tompkins County.  All material must be clean, dry, and odorless, and be placed in clear plastic bags. The drop spot locations and hours are:
