Numerous studies show that one way to keep skills sharp over the summer is to read regularly.  In an effort to prevent students from falling behind, and at the same time encourage each other to continue to read wildly, the entire Lansing Middle School sixth grade has made a commitment to provide free, 24/7 access to books throughout the summer.

Working closely with Mr. Bob Beck, who generously donated his time and expertise, the students constructed two 'Little Free Libraries' which house donated books.  These libraries, complete with cedar siding and shingled roofs, are located at the main entrance to Lansing Middle School (6 Ludlowville Road, Lansing) and on a fence post at Scoops Ice Cream (104 Auburn Road, Lansing).

The libraries are for everyone to use. If you need a book, take a book; and if you have a book, leave a book. If you take a book, you may return it when you're done or give it to someone else.  All the students ask is that you make sure another person will have the opportunity to read it.

Lansing is fortunate to have our own Lansing Community Library and groups like Lansing Loves to Read which help promote and provide reading opportunities for our community. The sixth graders are hopeful that their project will also help promote literacy by providing quick and easy access to books this summer.  Whether you are looking for adventure, an escape, a mystery to solve, or just wanting to learn something new, look for the libraries, and read on!
