tc jailInmates at the Tompkins County Jail recently completed a First Aid course while incarcerated thanks to the assistance of TST BOCES Adult Education programs.

This program is a new collaborative initiative between TST BOCES and the Tompkins County Jail.   TST BOCES Adult Education provides training programs at the Tompkins County Jail with the support of Sheriff Ken Lansing in an effort to provide skills to assist with re-entry into the community and new skill sets that can be added to their resumes.

This past June, an OSHA 10 training program was also offered. These trainings are created to be short-term for guaranteed completion. In the future, Director of External Programs at TST BOCES Diahann Hesler hopes to offer Food Safety Sanitation and First Aid.

When inmates were surveyed regarding their interest in trainings, more than half of the facility indicated that they were interested in the OSHA 10 program; the course was able to accommodate 11 at that time.

TST BOCES meets with inmates before release to provide a packet of educational and community resources. Organizations such as TST BOCES Adult Education, the Mary Bogan College Initiative, Tompkins County Probation Department and Tompkins Learning Partners now meet on a monthly basis to increase communication in addressing the needs of the region effectively. These organizations provide mentoring, training and education to the inmates of the Tompkins County Jail, helping to enable a successful transition back into society.
