dearmargaretDear Margaret: I'm one of those people who can't seem to find their one true passion. I'll be retiring soon and am dreading the thought of never having found that one thing that makes my heart sing and contributes to society. The real problem is that I have many things that interest me, and I tire of them easily and go on to the next endeavor. I feel like I'll always be an amateur or "Jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none." I want my life to have counted for something. My friends for the most part seem to have a direct path they are following. Mine is all over the place. Will I live my whole life as an amateur?
The Amateur

Dear The Amateur: Did you know the word 'amateur' comes from the French and means one who loves, or lover? You are one who dabbles in the arts or other pursuit but does not make it your life-long endeavor. Such a disservice has been done to individuals with varied interests by trying to Pidgeon hole them into finding just one "passion." I firmly disregard the notion of the One True Passion. You bring spice and passion to each new endeavor. We need people like you! If you'd never heard that we are all supposed to follow that one thing in our life that gives meaning, would you feel like you fall short? I suggest you would enjoy each new delight with fervor. Continue to sample all in life that you find interesting, and find your joy in that for as long as it holds your attention. You can inspire others with your enthusiasm in the variety life contains.
