TST BOCES Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Matteson addressed the Lansing Board Of Education for the first time Monday.  Matteson began his duties as District Superintendent of TST BOCES on June 1.  He said BOCES will be there for Lansing schools to help offer quality education within tough budget limitations.

"We know there are still challenging times ahead," he said.  "There was another article in the paper this weekend about our tax cap calculation that is going to be limited to a multiplayer of 1.66% it's pretty tough trying to make budget with escalating costs that are out of your control.  We pledge as a BOCES to do our best to stay within the expectations you have to try to make your budget and still offer quality services."

He told the board that BOCES offers year 'round programs for local district school students.  Regional summer school programs are currently running on the BOCES campus.  TST BOCES serves nine school districts educating a total of about 14,000 students.


Matteson comes to BOCES from Canisteo, NY, where he served as Superintendent of Schools for Canisteo-Greenwood Central School District for five years.  Before that he was Millbrook High School Principal, Tioga Middle School Principal, and Assistant Principal at Peoples Academy in Morrisville, VT.  He began his career teaching Social Studies in South Royalton, VT.

Matteson told the Lansing board he will be lobbying for consistency in state mandated testing.

"I know we have challenges as we adjust to the new baseline announced by the State, with what our state test scores look like with the new Common Core curriculum," he said.  "While we may not have liked the timeline along which everything was rolled out we need the tests to stay the same for a while so we can see if we are making progress.  For that we will be grateful, and that's the message I will send when I go to Albany.  For now let's let this ride and continue the good work that was started and see this thing through so that we can actually follow through with this initiative to the end."
