recycle foodscraps120The Tompkins County Solid Waste Division – in partnership with the Village of Lansing – announced the opening of a food scrap recycling drop spot at 2405 North Triphammer Road.

The new drop spot behind the Lansing Village Office will be open every Saturday beginning October 25th from 10:00am to 1:00pm. The free service will allow residents to expand their recycling options and reduce their trash disposal costs.

The material collected each week will be taken to Cayuga Compost in Trumansburg for processing, with the resulting compost marketed to farmers, landscapers and homeowners as a soil amendment.

The Solid Waste Division offers free kitchen caddies, transport containers and compostable bags to encourage residents to participate in food scraps recycling. The program is seen as playing a significant role in meeting the County’s goal of 75% waste diversion by 2016.

Food Scrap Recycling Drop Spots are also located at the Recycling and Solid Waste Center in Ithaca, at Cayuga Compost on Agard Road, at the Dryden Town Highway Department (Saturdays only) and at Cornell Cooperative Extension on Willow Avenue in Ithaca (Sundays only).

Staff will be on hand each week at the drop spot to answer questions and provide written material about the benefits of food scrap recycling. Residents will also find a supply of replacement compostable bags, as well as caddies and transportation containers for users new to the program.
