Syracuse I-Day
On October 27, 2015 students from Groton, Dryden, and McGraw attended the leading regional insurance conference know as I-Day. Groton high school's College and Career Prep class arrived early to school that day and boarded a coach bus that took them to the Syracuse Oncenter. Once they arrived, the day began with a continental breakfast at 8:00 a.m. The students then listened to an engaging talk by motivational speaker Ryan Hanley, Head of Marketing at TrustedChoice.com.

Throughout the day the students networked and interviewed people in the insurance industry as they explored the exhibit hall and vendor booths where they picked up a lot of complementary items. They keynote presentation was held during a professional luncheon. The speaker was former Syracuse Alumnus and retired NFL player Donovan Jamal McNabb.


Groton College and Career Prep Teacher Babs Carr said, "The students had a fabulous time and came away with a lot of insurance knowledge" she then added, "they were commended on their professionalism by many of the attendees."

There were over 800 insurance professionals in attendance this year. Dryden Mutual Insurance Company sponsored the trip for the students by providing coach bus transportation and covering the ticket cost ($85 per student) as part of the InVEST Program.  The InVEST Program is a partnership between Dryden Mutual Insurance Company, Security Mutual Insurance Company, Robert C. Dempsey Insurance Agency, Inc., Bailey Place Agency, Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of NY, Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, and Wells Fargo Financial Advisors.


Throughout the year representatives from these businesses discuss scholarships and career opportunities within the field as well as teach the College and Career Prep students about insurance and financial risk, the importance of having the right type and amount of insurance and personal risk management. The students learn professional etiquette, how to conduct an interview, how to network and professional dress before going to the event.

High School Group Visits Senior Center
Wednesday November 4, 2015 National Junior Honor Society students participated in an un-schooling day, visiting with local residents at the Groton Nursing Home. The 8th graders made all the cookies they  brought with them during their half day community service experience. As a group they walked the short distance from the school to the residential center bringing the baked goodies with them. The students stayed to visit in the recreation center, played games such as cards and dice with the residents. A group of students also went door to door in the facility to offer treats to those that were not able or unwilling to leave their room.  “It was a great experience for all the kids and I know they really felt good when they left” said Junior High Student Council Advisor Laurie Crandell Hogan. The next un-schooling day for Groton high school students will be held December 2, 2015.
