kitchen sampson'Julie, Montreal"' - painting by Michael Sampson

Kitchen Theatre Company brings 'Abstracting the Figure: Paintings by Michael Sampson' to the Judith Holliday Gallery at KTC. A reception for the artist will be held on Friday, December 1 from 5pm-7pm at Kitchen Theatre Company's Judith Holliday Gallery, 417 West MLK/State Street, Ithaca, NY.

Sampson has a BFA from Monserrat College and has been exhibiting his work in this region since 2003. A member of the State of the Art Gallery in Ithaca, NY, his work has been seen at CSMA Gallery, Sola Art Gallery in Ithaca; Finger Lakes Exhibition, Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester; and Montreal Art Center in Canada.

"My paintings start from figure drawings that I either paint on top of or transfer to canvas. I am interested in gestural, quick compositions from the live model that I can build on as my paintings progress," Sampson says. "Though abstract, my paintings assert multiple readings, which I very much allow and hope for in each piece. I think of the model as a collaborator. I am finding shapes and lines in the model's body, but I am also making a picture about them. The colors and textures reveal something I am conveying about the model, and as my muse the model breathes life into my work which would not be there if I was not working with a model."

Paintings will be on display through December 15. The gallery is open one hour before every performance.
