The Plantsmen Nursery
Welcome! After your virtual visit, we hope you’ll come to the nursery in person. You’ll love our 11 scenic acres with nursery grounds, display gardens, woods, ponds, wetlands, and our unique koi urn--just a few minutes from Ithaca in the picturesque Finger Lakes Region. As well as growing choice landscape plants not found at other nurseries, we're proud of our local native plant propagation program, the most comprehensive retail operation of its kind in New York State.
Our plants are locally-grown without toxic pesticides or herbicides. We hand weed; we maintain the highest quality by moving plants at the right times from greenhouse to shadehouse to outdoors; and we do a lot of hand-watering to make sure plants get just what they need. I've been propagating and raising native plants in the nursery environment for over 15 years, so it's not a fad or a lark. It's my trade, and while I take it very seriously, I'm grateful for the beauty and pleasure that come with the work.
When you hear about a nursery growing their own plants (an anachronism in the nursery industry these days), you may envision puny plants with weeds in the pots, poorly labeled and in very small lots. We're proud to be the opposite of that image!--a unique local nursery with the character and sensuality of a retail nursery, but the professionalism and inventory of a wholesale grower. Many of our customers say our plants are cheaper than any other nurseries around, but also healthier and more robust. How can both be true? It's amazing what raising and growing plants--nursing them!--at the nursery can do for their health, and for your budget. Come out for a visit and you'll see!
In our third year of new ownership, we're growing more than just annuals and perennials--shrubs, trees, ferns, grasses, vines, wetland plants, and more. A small taste from our menu includes marsh marigold, species columbines, day lily, lizard's tail, little bluestem, prairie dropseed, switchgrass, Culver’s root, hops, witch hazel, American beech, elderberry, serviceberry, ironwood, moosewood, pagoda dogwood, sassafras, tussock sedge, blue wood sedge, bigleaf aster, white wood aster, cinnamon fern, ostrich fern, jack-in-the-pulpit, and a host of native species and well-behaved guests, 100% nursery-propagated.
Plants are enchanting and seductive, haunting and evocative. They call us into the garden and uniquely connect us with the real world. This connection is the spirit of every garden, large or small, professional or backyard. If you have strong feelings about plants, visit a nursery with a horticultural passion as deep as your own.
See you when you visit,
