Spotlight Swimmer: Emily O'Brien Print
Joyce Mulcahy Jones
Friday, 29 February 2008
Emily O'BrienWhile some teenagers and kids are home watching TV, playing video games or being couch potatoes, other kids and teens are at the swimming pool.  This is the case for Lansing's Emily O'Brien (age 14). Emily has been named the LCATS Swim Club's 'Spotlight Swimmer' by the coaches of the LCATS Swim Club.

At a recent swim meet in Albany (Region 1), Emily recorded a blistering time of 59.57 in the 100 butterfly event.   Her previous personal-best time was 1:00.22. According to Coach Reed Dewey, "Emily's time is huge.  She now has a 'AAAA time' which means she is one of the fastest 14-year-old girls doing the butterfly in the country!"

In another event, the 50 freestyle, Emily tied another swimmer with the time of 25.92.  She then had to do a 'swim off' to determine which swimmer could advance to the finals.  This was the first time she has experienced this in competition.   When asked about this, Emily said, "I thought it was exciting because it meant that I had another chance to get into the finals."  She won the swim off with a time of 25.41.   Her time in the finals was 25.73.   Emily's previous best time was a 26.47 in the 50 freestyle.

ImageAs the season comes to a close I think of three seniors boys who have been on this team with me for a number of years. Dan Baldini, Phil Kulis & Ricky Newton have provided a number of thrills along the way. With these boys Lansing has won back to back Section Class “C” Titles, has won all of Section IV (something no other Class “C” boys team has ever done) and set a New York State record as the First Class “C” team to ever make it to the New York State Finals.

As a team this year we had an up & down season but along the way with help from freshman Trevor Rounds & Tim Carlson along with juniors Tyler Mix, Patrick Nedrow we worked hard though the regular season. Once tournament time came around the team was there to respond tying for second @ the IAC Championship, Winning Sectional Class “C” and finishing 5th @ the Section IV State Qualifier. We had help from Harrison Herzog, Troy Hradisky along with other that will help in the future.

ImageOn February 13, 2008, the Lansing Boys' Varsity Swim Team went to Watkins Glen for sectional pre-lims.  The highlights included two new Watkins Glen pool records posted by Lansing's senior All-American swimmer Jake Sangren.  As the first leg of the 200 freestyle relay, Jake posted a time of 22.83 which counted for a time in the 50 freestyle.  This time is now a new Watkins Glen pool record and replaces the old time of 22.86 set by Lansing's Sterling Gell in 2007. In the 100 backstroke, Jake recorded a new Watkins Glen pool record by improving his own time (53.70) with his new time of 52.93.
