Lansing Students Make A Difference Print
Dan Veaner
Friday, 04 April 2008
Tonight (Friday) at 5pm Lansing Youth Services hosts its annual spaghetti supper to raise funds to support its programs.  But this time Lansing middle schoolers will also be raising money for Family and Children's Services of Ithaca.  "I am so blown away by this," says Youth Services Program Manager Isabel Bazaldua.  "I am so proud of these students.  A lot of people think of middle-schoolers as selfish.  This program demonstrates to me that they simply need an opportunity to demonstrate their generosity and that they're really not selfish."

Silver Sabotage Raises Money For Cancer Print
Dan Veaner
Friday, 04 April 2008
Leave it to Lansing High School students to make fundraising fun.  This year the Student Council (SCO) has been finding unique ways to raise 'Pennies For Patients,' a national fund raiser for the benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society .   'Stall The Teacher' had participating teachers counting student-donated pennies before they could start teaching that day.  Some kids got really into it and some of the teachers did.  A cake wheel raised almost $200.  A rave for charity and a raider ball tournament were part of the effort.  But a recent competition raised $421.11 as students from each of the four classes sabotage their competitors' penny jars.

Tops and Dick's Help Rec Department Print

Lansing Recreation Department Director Steve Colt announced that Dick's Sporting Goods would be donating equipment to the baseball and softball programs for the second year this Spring.  The company is donating equipment for the teams, plus discount coupons for the coaches, and special coupons for the players to buy baseball or softball equipment such as gloves, bats, shoes, apparel, and training aids. "There is obviously some benefit to them in advertising, but if that works for them that's great!" says Colt.  "Because it's working for us."

Colt says he was contacted unexpectedly last year by the corporate office.  He says he was skeptical at first, but was soon convinced that the donation comes with no strings attached.  Last year the company donated good quality equipment bags, water bottles for the kids, batting helmets, dry marker boards -- a coaching aid for positioning, score books, and about a dozen balls.  This year Colt says the donation is a little smaller, but still quite generous.
