Friday, 05 October 2007
ImageIf you have young children, you may want them to attend college someday - and you may want to help them pay for it. At the same time, you also need to save for a comfortable retirement lifestyle. Are the two goals compatible?

There's no easy answer to this question. But one thing seems clear: For many parents, saving and investing for their children's future is every bit as important - and maybe more so - than saving and investing for their own. In fact, two-thirds of parents said they would postpone retirement if necessary to help pay for their children's college education, according to a survey by Alliance Bernstein Investments, Inc.

Image Your school days may be behind you, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't test yourself on various subjects from time to time. And one of the most important topics you can study is Retirement Planning. So, take a couple of minutes to take this "quiz." The answers - and even the questions - may prove valuable to you as you save and invest for retirement.

Have you put a "price tag" on your retirement lifestyle?
All of us have different ideas of the "ideal" retirement. Your brother may plan to travel the world, your sister may want to open her own small business and you may choose to volunteer. Once you know how you want to spend your retirement years, you can calculate about how much your retirement will cost. A financial advisor can help you arrive at a good estimate of how much you'll need to spend per year.

Business Profile: Lisa's Dream Print
Dan Veaner
Friday, 28 September 2007
Lisa's DreamLisa Craig has been dreaming of owning her own hair salon for some time.  But the dream was more specific than that:  she wanted to open it in the corner storefront in Lansing Plaza.  And she wanted to work with friends.  "My dream was to be working with friends, people that are good at what they do, she says.  "I firmly believe that if you surround yourself with good people you will improve yourself as well.  And to be able to play good and wholesome music that gives God honor, that's my dream too.  So having a place where people feel better on the outside when they leave but also may feel a little better on the inside and can be nurtured physically, emotionally, spiritually that's that's my dream -- to help people inside and out, to make it more complete for them."

A Trumansburg native, Craig says she always knew she wanted to be a hair stylist.  She even began cutting hair for friends, their mothers, and her own family when she was only 12 years old.  After finishing high school she attended Auburn International Beauty School.  She has been styling hair for 23 years, most recently working at Salon T at the Shops at Ithaca Mall.

Image To protect your family, you need more than the best intentions - you need the right "paperwork." And you're going to need it during two distinct phases of your life - your working years and your retirement.

Let's take a look at these time periods, along with some of the key documents you may need.

Working Years
While you're working, your most valuable asset is your income. Without it, your family might not be able to pay off the mortgage or send the kids to college - and that's why you need to put the appropriate insurance and protection policies to work.
