In the December 23 Entertainment section, I enjoyed the Smart Talk article. I have to add two of my least favorite sayings - The all time first is "eachin-every" as in each and every one of you. Why can't we say each one or every one, but not both? Then, of course, there is concensus of opinion. Concensus means the opinion, so we don't have to add that. Let's have more of these silly redundant sayings brought to light so that we can eliminate them. From: Louise Bement

I appreciate Jim Evans' column on the Entertainment page. Our town has some excellent writers and I'm glad to see "The Lansing Star" tapping this resource. -- Mary Sullivan |

Ever since I helped setup Lansingschools.org first websever in 1998, I have been urging the District to post School Closings on its website in a timely fashion. It is tiring to have to wait thru 20-30mins of commercials on commercial radio, only to get the annoucement barely 5 mins before you have to wake up the kids to go to school. Since then, Lansing Schools has even stopped making annoucements on non-commercial radio, such as WSKG. Initially the idea was cancelled by Andrea Price whom was extremely techno-phobic, saying "it can not be done securely". Since then that arguement has prevailed. Yet, if the district really has such low-confidence in the security of webserver, then it probably does not belong on the Internet at all. Further, radio stations often get thier information wrong, or wrong by ommission (eg: WSKG). It would be great to have someplace that was more 'authoritative'.As you are undoubtly aware, postings can be securely managed (eg: lansingstar.com). Techno-phobic responses to this issue are inappropriate. Perhaps The Star could help raise attention to this community issue? Perhaps it could even help host a page if the Schools can't pull it off? I have been asking for this now for 7 years, ... the district Staff and Adminstrators will no longer even reply to my inquiries on the matter. After my youngest graduates next year, I suppose it won't matter. This seem like an awful way to handle the issue. Editor's Note: The Lansing Star is handling school closings, but has hit what we hope is a minor bump in getting the information from the school district. When there is a closing or other important alert, it is shown in red just under the top banner advertisement on the front page. Like Mr. Eckstrom, we hope to get school closing alerts automated very soon. |

I'm taking a break this week. I have opinions about things, but sitting here for the past hour trying to come up with something seasonal yet with bite I've realized I just want to take a break. I could talk about the water district, or the sewer, or Christmas shopping. I thought about writing about the so-called "War on Christmas," noting that there are Christmas decorations in the Village office and I am not offended or worried about the first amendment. How fuel prices affect snow removal would have been a good one. In fact how they have pummeled budgets of municipalities in general isn't getting enough attention in my opinion. The School District has been dealing with a budget overrun so severe the was question was raised whether the food service could afford to bake a teacher's award winning cookies. |

On the first day of shopping, Black Friday, my true love said to me, "Don't try to go near the mall today. Wait until Monday or Tuesday." She knows I am not a shopper. I know she is one. I took her advice to heart. You should try to trust your experts. By the way, "Black Friday" is called that because it is the busiest day in the year for retailers, the one that pushes them from red ink into the black. With my allergies to shopping I thought it was a metaphor likening shopping to the black plague. Following my expert's advice took me to about the fourth day of shopping. Well, that was the plan, but to tell the truth it was around the 12th day of shopping when I finally braved the Pyramid Mall. It is amazing how reasonable the crowds are when everyone else is at work. I am lousy at picking out gifts, so I agonized through several of the stores, determined not to leave until my list was finished. |
