What a relief! An acquaintance from New Orleans showed up in my computer buddy list this morning. She and her family made it safely out of town, some of them going to Texas, the rest to Atlanta. Phones don't work, including cell phones, but she said that thanks to her computer and Internet access she had located most of her loved ones and they are safe.
Not so much her home town. New Orleans residents are generally less well informed than the rest of us, because they don't have access to the news media. And those who have gotten far enough away from town to see the news are getting the disaster story we are all getting, plus rumors. Not very satisfying when there may be nothing left of your home.

If the voters are asked whether they think the school district should spend $6 million dollars for a new High School auditorium what would the answer be? It's hard to say. On the one hand Lansing is a fiscally conservative community. The first referendum on building a new town hall was defeated, and the new government building was only approved in a scaled down version in the second referendum.

If anyone thinks road construction in Lansing is bad, you should try driving around Ithaca this summer. While you can get through the logjams on Triphammer Road in just a minute or two, Ithaca has become a perpetual maze . Try driving down Court Street and you'll find it fenced off with enormous holes dug into it. It's been that way for a year and there is no sign that it is near finished.

More than once I've heard people say there are several Lansings. There's old Lansing, comprised mainly of the farming community. There is wealthy Lansing. There is commuter Lansing. There's the Village and the Town... I don't buy it. If there were so many Lansings how did we get a community that works so well? There is a high volume of participation in the schools, the fire department, on the things that are important to all the residents here. Sure, there are different demographics, but we all seem to agree on what is truly important. And this has contributed to a remarkable town that accomplishes quite a bit more than you would expect from a community of this size. |
