 A week ago Thursday I listened with interest to the debate at the school board meeting on choosing the next school superintendent. Martha Laux made a compelling argument that by excluding the public from much of the search process the school board would exacerbate the community's mistrust of the board. That has certainly been an issue for the school board in recent years. And on a personal note I don't think they help themselves by rescheduling meetings to conflict with other local municipal meetings, as they did last week, thus making it harder for the press to cover their activities and report to the public.
Laux's argument made me think long and hard about the trust issue. And I have to say that over the past week of thinking about it, somewhat to my surprise, I have come to disagree with her. To me it is more important to get the right person into the superintendent's office than the process. If the school board can find someone they can all get behind and consistently support, then I am going to trust them more. I don't care how they do it.

 In your July 6th issue, “School Board Says Frewell to Iacobucci”, you stated that during the last BOE meeting “…almost nothing could be passed, because four votes were needed to pass resolutions, and with only four members present everyone had to vote 'yea' in order to pass action items. Iacobucci abstained on almost all resolutions, including passing a new tobacco policy and several other items, some of which will mean that paying this month's bills will be put on hold until the full board can meet to pass the financial items.”
While what you stated is the truth, it is anything but the whole truth. In this case, your less than complete truth misrepresented the events of the evening.

I have attached a picture in which I edited out the memorial bench to
Harry Uhl. I have asked the Lansing Town Hall to have the bench
relocated. The circumstances of the accident that killed Harry and
permanently disfigured and disabled my daughter's right are are
reprehensible. I am not condoning my daughters actions, but he was 29
years old and had no business with my 18 year-old daughter and her
friend on his boat. It was proved his rear light did not work and was
not sea worthy. I have the autopsy report of his blood alcohol at 11%.

I
am aghast that the Lansing Town Board did not use discretion in
allowing the bench to be placed in the park. It is an embarrassment to
our community. I no longer can go to my favorite place of solace after
enjoying the park since I moved here in 1983 (I was pregnant with
Nasreen).

I have said before that I miss Lansing's grocery store. That's why I'm a believer in planned growth. I don't want Lansing to become a suburb, but I do believe growth happens. If that is true, I want it to happen the way we Lansing residents want it to happen. If it works out, it could mean I get my grocery store.
There are two basic scenarios: growth occurs at the south of town, with new residents there shopping in the mall area of the Village of Lansing. I think of this as 'Village North.' The other is that growth comes to the so-called town center in the area loosely defined by Ridge/Peruville Roads from Triphammer Road in the east to Drake Road at the Western boundary. In this scenario density in the town center is sufficient to justify my grocery store, and maybe some professional offices or a bank.
