Out and About in the Finger Lakes
O
Mardi gras on the Cayuga Wine Trail fell on Valentines' weekend this year and, with the holiday on Monday for a lot of people, the wineries that are the starting points for the tour of all 16 were swamped the first few hours. We started at Six Mile Creek in Ithaca but quickly decided to take the back route and go up the east side of the lake to King Ferry and Long Point Wineries to avoid the tour buses. We were rewarded with a visit with Malvie and Chris at Trelaven in their elaborately decorated tasting room while Jim sipped the new Reserve Cabernet Franc.(He thoroughly enjoys "oaky, very dry" wines so that just hit the spot).

We found some great deals at Long Point and Swedish Hill along with compliments on our costumes from everyone who stopped us to have their photo taken with "The King" especially. We came down the west side to Buttonwood for one of Mary's favorites, "Blackberry Briar", to find Ken in his multicolored feather Mardi gras wig. By the time we finished chatting there we had to hurry for the competition at Americana and dinner at the Crystal Lake CafŽ afterward. The food there is fabulous, by the way, and they do a great Sunday Brunch. We consoled ourselves for not winning with a rare rib eye steak for Mary and seared honey mustard pork chops for Jim; the same meal, basically, we would have ordered if we had won, by the way, only we added the chocolate hazelnut torte to share.

ImageThis week is preparation for Valentines’ Day, Wine trail Mari gras, and Lunar New Year!! It is the Year of the Tiger in the Chinese calendar. Mary is busy with a costume for herself for once, and an addition to one of Jim’s earlier costumes for the Mardi gras competition. Not saying what the outfit will look like -- tune in next week to find out and see if they won.

Being so busy, we revisited a local favorite this week but decided to try breakfast instead of lunch. The bacon, egg, muffin sandwiches at Lansing Fresh Café are a completely different item than the fast food version. The muffin is toasted, the egg is poached, but hard, and the bacon is crisp! Jim and I had dessert since it was more like brunch: a fresh scone and a raspberry cream cheese Danish completed the treat. He likes the house blend of Gimme! Coffee while I really prefer the Mocha Java with double cream. We sat by the little gas log stove and relaxed for the first time all week.

ImageWe had a busy time a few weeks ago protesting shale drilling with friends in Albany.

It was an extremely wet day with hard rain and a wind that blew several umbrellas inside out, but the importance of the cause led many busloads of people to the Capitol to lobby on both sides.

Out and About in the Finger LakesThe semester for one local LACS student started bright and very early in Albany last week. Our 17 year old, "grand daughter by mutual choice" , Tigan, who has appeared earlier in this column as "Gavel Girl", talked her way into an internship at Empire Justice in downtown Albany in order to complete her alternative school required community internship. Because Jim's work also takes us to Albany and provides us with a small apartment there, we decided to turn half of our 12'x12' living room into a "Tiga-tat" room for her with some pvc pipe and 15 yards for fabric.

The first photo was taken at 6:45 am as she began the commute to her first official day of work car pooling with "Geek Guy", a.k.a. Jim Sullivan who, fortunately, works on a long term contract to someday bring the State of NY into the 21st century in an office a few blocks from hers.

ImageWe hope everyone had as nice a holiday season as we did. Frankly, it was so nice it's been hard to get back and take the time to write about it but we did find so new places to try and had some adventures to share along the way.

Jim's Santa suit is finally back in the closet for the next ten and a half months and we finally took the really FAT tree that we got at Moore's Tree Farm out to provide shelter for the small birds while they wait for the greedy blue jays to finish stuffing themselves at our feeders.
