The call for a community-based committee has been met with great interest by more than 30 volunteers, who will provide input to the school district as it seeks to address long-term educational and facility needs. The committee will meet throughout April, May, and June with the goal of bringing a recommendation to the Board of Education by the end of June.

Lansing school board president, Bonita Lindberg, indicated, "The Board of Education decided to take a step back after receiving input from an Ad Hoc Committee in January before putting a project up for vote. This will allow us time to re-evaluate district and community priorities regarding a capital improvement project."

The committee is divided into two components, a Facilities Group and a Community Awareness Group. Community resident Marc Stammer is facilitating the process on behalf of the group. The primary responsibilities of each group are outlined here:

Facilities Group
Assess Building and Site Infrastructure Needs Determine Facility Recommendations based on Educational Requirements and Needs Re-Build a ³passable² project starting at "zero"

Community Awareness Group
Identify and Implement Process for Gathering and Disseminating Information Identify Level of Community Support Develop and Implement Communication Strategies

At the first planning meeting on April 12, the committee identified concerns. Common threads were evident, and initially fell into four major categories in addition to the overall tax impact:

  • Community Awareness
  • Educational Program Needs
  • Health/Safety/Maintenance
  • Right-Sizing the Facility

The District has posted additional information on it's Web site website at www.lansingschools.org under the heading "From the Ground Up."
