Friday, 25 May 2007
(Ithaca, NY) – Speaking to a crowd of dozens of friends and supporters, Mayor Carolyn K. Peterson announced today that she is seeking a second term of office as Mayor of the City of Ithaca. In her announcement, the Mayor focused on several key areas, including:

  • Leadership in affordable housing initiatives and climate change efforts
  • New relationships between the city and town to explore shared and consolidated services
  • Support for dynamic new programs through community block grant funds such as; commercial drivers license training and immigrant support services
  • Work around issues of diversity and inclusion in the workforce, on boards, and in the broader community
  • A budgetary commitment to infrastructure improvement and maintenance
  • A diversification in approach to business to encourage new investment in Ithaca
  • And more (please read the next page for a text of the full speech)

In her announcement, the mayor also spoke about the challenges that upstate New York mayors face on a daily basis: “Striving to maintain a healthy city through fiscal responsibility, infrastructure management, supported employees, and an engaged citizenry, in the upstate environment, is a tremendously complicated task,” said Mayor Peterson, “Yet I am committed to the success of Ithaca and wish to continue that work for another term.”

"I'm thrilled that Carolyn is running for a second term, said Ithaca Common Council member Dan Cogan, “She has begun many important initiatives in the past three and a half years, and her leadership over the next four years will help see them through to completion.”

“Carolyn has involved more people in the decision making process than ever before,” said Ithaca Common Council member Maria Coles while citing her strong support for the Mayor, “She has always listened to residents and advisory groups, and has called for Common Council to provide not just consent but advice as well.”

Mentioning his reasons for supporting Mayor Peterson, Ithaca resident Ken Deschere noted that, "Mayor Petersonbrings dignity, grace, and compassion to City Hall.” He added, “Her years of active involvement in so many parts of our community and her compassion for all people and the environment give her insight and wisdom that is perfectly suited for leadership."
