A graduate of Ithaca High School Class of 1970, Janet attended the University of Pittsburg and completed her degree in accounting at Ithaca College. An avid reader, she enjoyed reading books and several newspapers every morning. She will always be remembered for her laughter and her gardening abilities. She was a member of St. James AME Zion Church.

In addition to her mother Viola Bailey, Janet is survived by her son, Samuel "Mel" Cauthen; a granddaughter, Alexis Michelle Cauthen-Whittaker, a sister, Kathy Milton Bailey; three nieces, Unique LeFlore, Jessica Scott, and Lois Watts; four nephews, Jerome Prescott, James Bailey, Brandon and Ryan Watts; a host of aunts, uncles, great nieces and great nephews and cousins and friends. Also a long time friend, Darryl Howard. Janet is predeceased by her husband, Samuel Lenny Cauthen; her father, Evans W. Bailey Sr., who died October 20, 2007; her brother, Sonny Bailey; a niece, Tanisha Brooks; and a sister, Alma Jean O'Daniels.

Friends and family may call Saturday November 17, 2007 from 12 Noon until time of 1:00 p.m. Funeral Service at St James AME Zion Church in Ithaca. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Ithaca. Memorials may be made St. James AME Zion Church, 116 Cleveland, Ave., Ithaca. Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Herson Funeral Home.
