Lansing Youth Service Committee Celebrates 20th Anniversary

About 40 people gathered at the Benson’s residents on Lansingville Road to celebrate the Lansing Youth Services Committee’s 20th anniversary. Attendees at the November 15th event included town officials, school administrators, past and present committee members and programs managers, as well as staff from Cornell Cooperative Extension and Tompkins County Youth Services Department.

Andra Benson and Barbara Barry, founders and still active members of the Lansing Youth Service Committee, gave a historical perspective of Lansing Youth Services. True to its roots, LYS still serves middle school youth who do not participate in traditional school or community activities. Most recently the committee expanded their program to serve high school youth in a first time employment program. Steve Farkas presented the Committee with a proclamation made by the Town Board.

Proclamation

Whereas the Lansing Youth Service Committee has effectively recognized and addressed changing youth needs in Lansing for 20 year and,

Whereas the Lansing Youth Service Committee has provided youth service programs to promote health, happiness, and well being of Lansing youth and,

Whereas the Lansing Youth Service Committee encourages participation and contributes to the quality of life and sense of community in the Town of Lansing regardless of age, race, ethnicity, social status, gender, disability, and,

Whereas the Town of Lansing appreciates the dedication contributions of the volunteers and staff of the Lansing Youth Service Committee and,

Now therefore be it resolved that the Town of Lansing Proclaims November 15th, 2007 Lansing Youth Service Committee Day.

The County Youth Services Department credited Lansing with being instrumental in recognizing the need to provide youth development programs designed to meet local needs. Today 9 rural municipalities run similar programs.
