On January 19, 2008, the Lansing Boys' Varsity Swim Team took part in the Vestal Swimming and Diving Invitational in Vestal. This gave the team competition from one of Section IV's top swim teams, Vestal (defending Class A sectional champs), as well as Greene's High School Swim Team. The Lansing team recorded many new meet record times in their events as well as other record time swims.
Lansing's Senior All-American swimmer, Jake Sangren, broke his new Section IV 100 backstroke record with a new time of 51.80. The state record in this event is now 49.65 which was set by Ricky Henahan of Irondequoit at the state meet on 3/1/07. Jake's new record time sets the following: Section IV record, IAC League record, Vestal pool record, and Lansing school record.
Jake Sangren also set a new Lansing school record in the 200
individual medley with a time of 1:59.68. The previous record was held
by Hans Roser (2007) with a time of 2:00.19. This time is also a meet
record and pool record. Jake's time takes down Vestal's Adam Bielecki's
pool record time which was previously 1:59.91. The previous meet record
time was 2:03.24 also set by Vestal's Adam Bielecki.
The Lansing
200 medley relay team (Jake Sangren, David Bandler, Dan Ravas, Casey
Hagin) recorded a new meet record time of 1:42.04. This team moves
closer to a state qualifying time which is 1:41.72. Second place went
to the Vestal A team (Mike Tingey, Tyler Hopf, Sam Gaynes, Nick
Dupree). Another meet record time was recorded by Lansing's 200
freestyle relay team (Casey Hagin, David Bandler, Dan Ravas, Jake
Sangren) with a time of 1:31.82. This team also moves closer to a state
qualifying time of 1:30.69. Second place went to the Vestal A team
(Nick Dupree, Mike Tingey, Jeremy Borrelli, JP Caudrillier).
Just
before the 100 butterfly event, Head Coach Brian Vaughan stated, "Dan
Ravas is perfectly capable of making the state cut time in the 100 fly.
He went 57.44 in the previous meet. He needs to shave off 2 seconds to
go faster than a 55.38." Lansing's junior stepped up to the starting
block, with all other lanes occupied by Vestal (Class A) swimmers.
Vestal's Sam Gaynes (seed time: 57.35) was in lane 3, Jeremy Borrelli
(seed time: 58.38) was in lane 2, Nick Dupree (seed time: 1:02.81) was
in lane 1, Brian Murphy (seed time: 1:01.96) was in lane 5 and Colin Lu
(seed time: 1:04.81) was in lane 6. Lansing's Dan Ravas (seed time:
57.44) then swam 54.94 to place first and set a new meet record time.
His time was a state qualifying time. Vestal's Nick Dupree came in 2nd
place (55.85) and Sam Gaynes came in 3rd place (57.47). Dan Ravas also
came in first place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.46. Vestal's
JP Caudrillier took 2nd place (23.67) and Vestal's Mike Tingey took 3rd
place (23.69).
Other important place finishes for the Lansing
team included Casey Hagin's second place finish in the 200 individual
medley - his time was 2:20.53. He also finished 4th in the 100
freestyle (54.56). Ari Darlow (junior, co-captain) took third place in
the 200 freestyle (2:04.20). This was the junior co-captain's best time
this season in this event. Ari also came in third place in the 500
freestyle (5:38.59). David Bandler (junior) came in third place in the
