Tompkins GOP Responds To Spitzer Resignation Print Recommend This Article to a Friend
by Mike Sigler, Tompkins County GOP Chairman and Tompkins County Legislator
Friday, 14 March 2008
ImageThe Tompkins County GOP regrets the circumstances under which Governor Elliot Spitzer was forced to step down, but is happy the state can now move forward.  Many voters already have a low opinion of politicians and this sorry episode just reinforces that view.

It's the task of all elected officials to live up to the high standards demanded of us to combat those impressions.  I'm unhappy that it looks like the Governor chose to use his elected position as a bargaining chip in negotiations with federal prosecutors.  I think that just adds to the problems of the last week and I hope that David Patterson can re-establish some of the faith people need to have in their elected officials.

Two of the New York State's most senior Democrats, the Comptroller and now the Governor, have been forced to resign in disgrace.   The opportunity exists for Republicans to demonstrate that we can provide leadership of competence and integrity.  I look forward to working with my fellow Republicans at the state and local levels toward that goal.

With the deadline less than three weeks away, I hope we can get a timely budget that's embraced by most New Yorkers.  I'd like to say that the investigation ends here and we can put this all behind us, but it's only been two days since these revelations came to light.  He continues to call this a private affair, when in actuality some of this activity may have happened on company time.  If it wasn't for the pattern of wrongdoing, with the following of the State Senate Majority leader with State Police and of his support for issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, I'd believe this was an isolated incident.  Six years and $80,000 later, bargaining with your office for legal favor, along with those other issues, it clearly is not isolated.
