 Coming into the May 6th the dual meet vs. Elmira Notre Dame we knew our girls were going to have a tough meet on their hands. Our depth in the middle distance and distance program is what carried us to victory today. Senior Ryann Cretney was a triple winner in the 1500m, 800m and 3000m. She ran her races from more of a workout perspective than a race perspective today in a final tune-up for the Ithaca Relay’s this Friday.
Freshman Kathryn Shaw and Sophomore Katy Bland teamed up with Cretney in the 1500m for a 1-2-3 sweep in the event with Shaw (5:30) and Bland (5:23) running personal bests. They continue to improve meet by meet and show strong promise for the future of the Lansing Girls distance program.
Sophomore sprinter Chloe Ryan had an absolutely outstanding day on the track pulling a major upset over END phenom Olivia Weeks in the 100m dash. Chloe looked strong out of the blocks and finished strong to edge Weeks at the tape in 13.5, with Weeks taking 2nd and Freshman Lansing sprinter Lindsay Petry picking up 3rd. This race was big for us in the point’s column. All 3 girls will be the prime targets of rival sprinters come championship season.
On the boys side we again ran the meet from a workout perspective in prep for the Ithaca Relays. We knew coming in that END could not field a deep team as we won almost every running event on the track.
Sophomore Josh Barber had an impressive day as he stepped in for fellow Soph Eddy Potter who had the day off due to lack of competition and a steeplechase race downstate the night before. Barber was able to get in a quality workout winning the 1600m run in 4:47.0 in a solo effort. His time today was one second off of his personal best set last May. For him to run this time, especially by himself can only mean he is ready to pop something big come championship season. He later teamed up with fellow distance runners Travis Miller and George Wigsten for the 1-2-3 sweep in the 3200m and cruised to victory in the 400m Hurdles (an event new to him to prep him for steeplechases) in 1:05.0.
Senior Henry Potter was also a major force on the track as he had a lighter day focusing on some solid speedwork in the 200m (2nd) 400m (1st) and 4 x 400m relay which was victorious by a large margin. Senior Ken Tillapaugh also had a good day winning the 100m, Long Jump and Triple Jump.
Lansing Track and Field returns to action, this Friday, May 9th at the always competitive Ithaca Relays. Meet set to start at 5:00PM and will be run under the lights.
