Lansing Harriers Run Well at Ithaca Relays Print

ImageThe chance to compete against top notch competition came early this year for Lansing Boys and Girls track and field teams at the always competitive Ithaca Relays.

Nineteen quality programs from around Central New York, including Section 3 powerhouses Tully and Westhill High School came out to run last Friday with the best in Section 4.

Leading the way for the Lansing Boys was the Distance Medley Relay (DMR) comprised of Henry Potter (800m) Ken Tillapaugh (400m) Josh Barber (1200m) and Eddy Potter (1600m)  They teamed up to finish 4th in 10:54.6.  Their time is believed to be the fastest DMR run since 2003 and the 2nd fastest ever in Lansing history.  The three teams ahead of them (Binghamton, Tully, Corning) all placed highly at the NYS Cross Country Championships this fall.  Lansing continues to gain ground on the best of the best which is a sure sign that their hard work is starting to pay off.

Sophomore’s Josh Barber and Eddy Potter had absolutely outstanding legs on this relay.  Barber’s 3:21.7 1200m leg converts to anywhere between a 4:30-4:35 mile, while Potter anchored the relay home in a swift 4:33.4 1600m just getting outdistanced by Corning rival Jared Cornfield (also a soph) at the tape.  The showdown between these 3 harriers in the future is expected to be remarkable.  Barber and Potter continue to learn more and more about the focus and the dedication it takes to become the best each week and have bright futures ahead of them.

Lansing Girls also had a stellar day on the track.  The Girls 4 x 100m relay team of Senior Carol Melice, Freshman Lindsay Petry, Freshman Kathryn Hornibrook and Sophomore Chloe Ryan finished 3rd in 51.4.  This time was .1 off their best for the year.  This quartet continues to make a name for itself in Section 4 barely losing to powerhouse Binghamton and Waverly in the event.  The matchup between Lansing and Waverly will most likely be repeated at the Section 4 State Qualifier meet in June, with the winner headed to the State Championships to represent Section 4.  The girls have been focused all year and continue to respect the bigger picture at hand down the road.
