Continuing his strong support for youth athletics as a means to help students succeed and live safe, healthy lives, State Senator Michael F. Nozzolio today announced he has successfully secured a $15,000 state investment for physical fitness programs at Lansing High School.

"Childhood obesity is a pandemic across the United States and is the leading cause of diseases such as diabetes and heart disease in our young people," said Senator Nozzolio. "It is critical that we take the necessary steps to increase activity in our students and ensure that they learn the benefits of exercise and leading a healthy life."

Steven Grimm, Superintendent of Lansing School District said, "One of the goals of our school district has been to enhance our physical education curriculum and to provide students with a fitness room, along with the gymnasium and pool, as another physical education teaching station. In addition to being used by our scholastic athletic teams, the fitness room will be available to all our students for exercise programs, which are so important to overall health.

"The school district has tried for some time to identify the funding needed to provide this additional equipment but has been unable to do so. This state funding will go directly towards the students and this would not have been possible without the efforts of Senator Nozzolio," continued Superintendent Grimm.

Michelle Stone, Principal of Lansing High School, "For many years now, we have been trying to find funding for specialized cardiovascular equipment for our students. It is critically important that students have the resources to stay healthy and, on the behalf of all of the students of Lansing High School, I would like to thank Senator Nozzolio for securing this important state funding."
