ImageLansing High School will start this season with a big hole in its athletic program.  With the departure of Ed Redmond after 12 years as Lansing's Athletic Director, the district is scrambling to fill his position and some coaching positions for the Fall.  Principal Michelle Brantner says that his will be tough shoes to fill.  "People had no idea what Ed did here," she says.  "I think that's what happens when someone does their job very well."

Redmond was also Dean of Students, and coached baseball for 23 years and football on and off including last season.  Brantner says that she hopes to be able to name a replacement as soon as possible in this busy pre-season time.  "I hope soon," Brantner says.  "I hope we'll at least have an interim in place in the next week or so if we can find a viable interim candidate.  We are hoping to have a permanent person starting some time in September if we have a successful search process."

Redmond started at Lansing as a driver education and health teacher in 1984.  He became Athletic Director in 1966, then earned his administrator certification in 1999.  He was then appointed Athletic Director/Dean of Students.

Brantner says that she is already screening applications and setting up interviews, but because the position opened so recently.  The position is posted as ' Athletic Director/Assistant Principal,' a slight change from the  'Athletic Director/Dean of Students' position Redmond held.  But Brantner  says that the new title better reflects the responsibilities of the position.

Coaches are officially hired each year, so fall season coaches won't be officially named until approved at Monday's Board of Education meeting.  Currently there are holes in the coaching roster.  Though some coaches including a football coach are not chosen, Brantner says that Redmond agreed to handle that even though his last official day at Lansing was Wednesday.  Brantner says there have not been many applicants.

There is more urgency to filling the coaching positions than the Athletic Director post, because practice for cross country, volleyball, football, soccer, girls swimming, and girls soccer begins in August.  "I am just trusting that it will all happen," Brantner says.
