hf2007_web.jpg 'It was a dark and stormy night...'  That is not only the stereotypical beginning of turgid gothic novels, but it also happens to be how Lansing Harbor Festival began.  Last year th this time a freak storm blew tents across Myers park, broke huge limbs off of trees, snapped three utility poles near the Lansing school campus, and blew windows out of the High School.  On that dark and stormy night festival organizers frantically called bands, vendors, town officials, and others to see if there was any way Harbor Festival could occur as scheduled the next day.

When it became clear that it could not, they somehow pulled it together, and with a surge of community involvement, the festival was a resounding success one week later.  People noted that if it had occurred as scheduled the weather would have been in the 90s with high humidity.  The day it actually occurred was much more comfortable.  And this year the forecast is a very pleasant 'Partly sunny. Highs in the mid 80s. South winds around 10 mph.'

The second annual Lansing Harbor Festival is set for tomorrow (Saturday, August 23rd) at Myers Park.  The entertainment and events look to be every bit as promising as the weather.  The big draw is the top notch live bands, which include Ithaca New Orleans Dixieland Jazz Band,  Pete Panek and the Blue Cats, Alice Detrick and Triple Play, The Stoutmen, Backtalk Band, and The Burns Sisters.

The second annual Baker Cup Chicken Barbecue Sauce competition is open to all.  The winner will be announcd at 1:20pm.  Kids will be compete in a frozen T-shirt contest, and this year brings a new sand castle contest to the mix, with the winner announced at 5pm.

The kids pavilion will feature Live Alpacas from Angel Tree Alpaca Farm, Face Painting and Balloons -Asbury Church, Fun with homemade play dough -Lansing Drop-In, a Fossil Dig hosted by the Museum of the Earth, and games and activities throughout the day.  Crossroads the Clown will be performing throughout the Park, the Lansing Community Library will be reading stories, the Sciencenter will show kids how to create colorful windsocks, Asbury Church will offer Face Painting and Balloons, and the SPCA will offer catnip planting.

Cayuga Lake Seido Karate will perform a Seido Karate Demonstration, Family Reading Partnership will be making books, and a special addition this year is a tour of Cayuga Lake on the Floating Classroom.

Over 50 vendors are slated to fill up Vendor Row, and food vendors will feature chicken, hamburgers and hot dogs, Chinese/Vietnamese food, pizza, baked treats, and more.  From the opening ceremony at 10am to the Burns Sisters performance at the end of the day, Lansing Harbor Festival promises to be a great time.

Admission is free, parking is ample with runoff parking at the Lansing schools and free shuttle service to the park all day from noon to 8:30.

Best of all, Saturday promises to be a light and sunny day.
