Dear Editor,

Darn right, Dr. Campbell's book (see 10/14 story) is controversial. As a lifelong carnivore, I'm uncomfortable. But I'll bet he's right about a plant based diet being better in the long run.

Of course, I have a bone to pick, so to speak. Liver cancer is completely unknown in my extended family, and everyone grew up on farms drinking whole milk a quart at a time and eating red meat every day. But we were lucky to consume these foods in a form Dr. Campbell may not be considering.

All of our milk was raw, fresh from clean cows. And our cheese and butter were made from this milk. Raw milk is perfectly safe if strict sanitation is practiced. It's not only tastier but healthier. Processing destroys many beneficial enzymes that nature put in.

All of our meat came from our animals, raised on clean pasture and grain, with no additives.

Sadly, raw milk is illegal now -- unless you milk a family cow -- thanks to processors' lobbying and miseducation, and organic meat is expensive. Such products are most important in the formative years, when I was lucky enough to have them.

So, given what's available and affordable, Dr. Campell has a strong point.
