ImageThe Town of Lansing Parks and Recreation hosted a free Pitch, Hit, & Run competition sponsored by Aquafina and MLB.  This event was coordinated by Jim Strait and was overseen by many volunteers from the Lansing community.  This national skills program provides boys and girls, ages 7-14, the opportunity to showcase their pitching, hitting & running abilities.  PH&R is the official skills competition of Major League Baseball.

The four age groups are 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14 with boys and girls competing together (age is determined as of July 17, 2009).  All participants must provide a copy of a valid birth certificate or baptismal record for age verification.  Children may participate in one, two, or all three events.

Nothing but positive responses were heard to our event this Saturday.  The almost sixty kids that participated all had a great time, as did the parents that watched and cheered on the players.  All of the stations ran very well after a few minor hickups.  "For a first time event, I think that we did a good job and we made a difference," Strait says.  "All of the volunteers did a fantastic job and made the competition a fun, exciting time for all.  Next years turnout should be substantially greater than this, especially after the success of this years event. "

The champions from our local event get to advance to the sectionals hosted by the Syracuse Chiefs & Camillus Optimist Club at the Alliance Bank Stadium.  This event will be on Saturday, May 23, 2009.

PHR-Scores-2.jpg "I would like to thank all of the volunteers for their help," Strait says.  "I am very proud to be a member of this community and a coach in Lansing.  When wearing the LBP hat, the big "L" on the back of my sweatshirt or the Lansing billboard across my chest, I am part of a group that really cares about the kids.  In addition, a big thanks to Corbin Atkins, Jared Strait, Nic Atkins, Danny Cretney, and all of the other kids who helped out, provided equipment, or just participated.

"One final thanks to Steve, Pat, Maureen and the rest of the crew at the Lansing Recreation Dept. for all that they do.  We are very lucky to have a group that provides our kids with the support that their team does.  This department is one reason that our kids turn out as great as they do."
