School District Office to Move |

In Monday's regular School Board meeting, Lansing's Board of Education (BOE) voted unanimously to support moving the District Office to new quarters before the beginning of the 2006 school year. This was in response to Interim Superintendent Tiffany Phillip's plea at last month's meeting to move the district headquarters out of its small, ramshackle house on Ridge Road.
She identified several problems with the current headquarters, including health concerns and lack of adequate work and storage space. She also said that it does not provide a space where confidential meetings can take place and that does not present a positive image for the school district.
Originally a new district office was a part of the upcoming Capital Improvement Project that is currently being considered by the BOE. It would have been placed in the High School, on the current western wall of the building. However, it was dropped from the project because of expense and because it would not generate State aid dollars.
Last month Dr. Phillips presented a plan to the BOE to either rent space for two years or to place a temporary building on the site of the old restaurant on the corner of Ridge Road and Ludlowville Road that is owned by the district. She had identified two rental spaces within an eighth of a mile from the school campus.
The move will not benefit Dr. Phillips, who is filling in until permanent Superintendent Mark Lewis takes the helm in early January. Board President Bonita Lindberg promised to invite Dr. Phillips for the opening of the new office once the move is made, because she is spearheading the effort to relocate. The BOE's vote gave her the go-ahead to make arrangements for a move prior to August of 2006.
