ITHACA – Charles F. Phillips, age 83, a retired foreman and toolmaker at Morse Chain and Emerson Manufacturing, went to be with our God and Our Lord Jesus Christ, Saturday morning (September 17, 2005) at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca.

Mr. Phillips was a lifelong resident of Ithaca and a son of the late Claude & Lena Wilson Phillips. On May 15, 2005 he celebrated 66 years of marriage with his wife, Helen Myers Phillips.

As a veteran of World War II he served in the Navy until the end of the war. In the 1950’s, he was a pitcher for Allen Wales softball league as well as a member of the CB Radio Club in Ithaca. He was an avid hunter for all his life. He enjoyed golfing and he won many golf tournaments over the years. He was a member of the Neumann Golf Course in Ithaca. As a side hobby he built and designed specialized clubs for his friends.
He also built and flew model airplanes. His passion for this hobby led to him and his friends forming the Ithaca Modeling Squad. On many of Sundays and holidays, his family would take their picnic lunch to many flying exhibitions and enjoyed the racing and “dog fights” in the air.

Survivors include his wife Helen L. Phillips; two sons, Claude C. (Jane) Phillips of Ithaca and Daniel E. (Judy) Phillips of Virginia; two daughters, Donna L. (Melvin) Dawes of Florida and Eileen L. (Gary) Coles of North Carolina; a sister, Athena (Bill) Grover of Ithaca; nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Services and burial will be private. If desired, memorials may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #961. Arrangements were completed by Herson Funeral Home.
