Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton may have been the big winners in their home state primaries Tuesday, but Tompkins County voters had a different idea about who they wanted to run on the Democratic ticket in the general election.  And while Trump won the most Tompkins County votes, Lansing Republicans preferred John Kasich.


Bernie Sanders and Trump were the winners in Tuesday's presidential primary election -- at least in Tompkins County.  Sanders led Clinton 9,298 to 5,625, garnering 62.31% of the votes.  On the Republican side Trump snagged 37.13%.  Kasich took second place with 34.50%, followed by Ted Cruz (26.81%) and Ben Carson (1.55%).

Lansing Repulicans preferred John Kasich over TrumpTrump was more popular state wide, gathering 60.4% of the votes and 89 delegates.  Kasich came in second with 25.1% of votes and 4 delegates.  Cruz got 14.5% of votes, but no delegates.  The Democratic race was closer with Clinton winning 58% of primary votes and 139 delegates to Sanders' 42% and 106 delegates.

14,923 Tompkins County Democrats and 4,640 Republicans voted county-wide Tuesday.  In Lansing 1,525 Democrats and 854 Republicans went to the polls.

Lansing Republicans preferred Kasich over Trump 342 to 301.  Cruz had 198 votes and Carson only 13.  The average Republican Turnout in Lansing was 44.85%.  Lansing Democrats voted for Sanders over Clinton 830 to 695.  Democratic turnout averaged 50.65%.  The highest turnout for both parties was in South Lansing and the Village of Lansing.  County-wide Republican turnout was 40.28% and Democratic turnout 57.82%.  1,525 total voters turned out in Lansing.

Emily Adams (D), Barbara Lifton (D), Mathew K. Ashford, Svante Myrick (D) and Molly E. C. Grover (D) garnered the top votes for national convention delegates from Tompkins County.
