capitalbuilding 120Congressman Tom Reed supported a series of bills this week, aimed at making it easier for veterans to receive the care they need and deserve.

"As Memorial Day approaches, it's only right that we remember the sacrifices of our fallen heroes. We are forever grateful, and to honor their legacy, it is critical we stand with the veterans that are still with us," said Reed.

Proposals that the House will take up this week include needed reforms of the Family Caregiver program, a program which is facing a massive administrative backlogs, delaying benefits to severely wounded veterans and their family caregivers. Major features of the program include providing medical support for caregivers, who often suffer from health problems as they focus on the veteran's well-being, and providing stipends to compensate caregivers' time.

Other proposals include a bill which will make it easier for aging veterans to access adult day healthcare services. Another ensures a renewed focus on establishing strong leadership at VA hospitals and clinics, and the last would examine the effectiveness of programs available to help women and minority veterans transition back into civilian life.

The bills come in the wake of a recent spending debate, which prioritized federal spending, and directs $73.5 billion be available for veteran services. The bill prioritized funding for veterans' healthcare programs, including initiatives for veterans to see local non-VA doctors under certain circumstances, improve rural healthcare, homeless veterans' support services, and women's healthcare.

"We care about our veterans and they deserve our very best. Together, let's honor what the defenders of our freedom have endured for us and our nation," Reed concluded.
