ITHACA - Margaret R. Whelan, 93, died Thursday, December 17, 2009 at Cayuga Medical Center, five years to the day and within 15 minutes of the death of her beloved husband of over 50 years, Thomas F. Whelan.

Peggy (as she was affectionately known to family and friends) was born December 31, 1915 in Manhattan and grew up in Queens, New York. After graduating from Hunter College, she attended Jamaica Training School, and found she loved working for an export company just off Times Square. She insisted on postponing marriage until the war was over and her betrothed came home from war to stay. Thomas and Peggy married in 1946, and she devoted herself to her husband and children in Flushing, NY.

In 1972, the family moved to Columbus, OH. Sad to be away from extended family, she nevertheless soon developed many wonderful friendships. She was an active parishioner at Holy Spirit Church, and became a devoted volunteer at Mount Carmel Hospital working at everything from delivering flowers to emergency room triage for over 20 years.

She and Thomas moved to Ithaca in 2004 to be closer to family. She loved Gadabout and the fellowship she found at Immaculate Conception Church. She is survived by her children, Margaret Furey, William (June) Whelan, Patricia (Richard) Parrish, and Anne Marie (Steven Gilson); nine grandchildren; two nephews and three nieces.

Burial is at the Calvary Cemetery 10 a.m. Monday December 21, 2009. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday December 22, 2009 at Immaculate Conception Church. There will be no public calling hours. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice, as she donated to many.
