fe 120ESPN Ithaca/WPIE's Nick Karski was at the Lansing Board Of Education meeting Monday to honor eight fall and winter season Lansing athletes who won ESPN Ithaca & Ehrhart Fueling Excellence Athlete of the Week Awards.  Karski reviewed the achievements that led to their being honored.  Lansing MVPs honored were Alex Purcell, Caroline Dennis, Joe Koch, Sarah Gisler, Tim Kelley, Adele Ferris, Shea McCartney and James Overhiser.  Each of the MVPs received a T-shirt and a $50 donation, for a total of $400, to the Lansing Booster Club.

"Last year it was the MVP of the game during high school sporting events that we broadcast," Karski said.  "This year we decided to expand it to recognize student athletes' achievements on the field and on the court, in the swimming pool, wherever it may be, from all around Tompkins County and all around Section IV."

Boys Soccer Center Midfielder Purcell scored a combined 5 goals and 2 assists in Lansing's undefeated 3-0 start to the 2014 season.  Swimmer Dennis won the 200 Individual Medley, 100 Freestyle & 100 Breast Stoke against against Whitney Point, and contributed to two victorious relay teams.  Football Running Back Kelley rushed 22 times for 229 yards. He scored a total of 6 touchdowns, including an 82 yard kickoff return for a score in a 47-38 win over Watkins Glen.

Girls Soccer Goaltender Gisler was in net for shutout victories in both the Sectional semifinals and finals.  Girls Swimmer Ferris won the 200 Yard Individual Medley & 500 Yard Freestyle Individual, and competed in the NYS Championships.  She was part of Lansing's 200 Yard Medley & 400 Yard Freestyle Relay teams that snagged Section IV Class 'C' Championships.  Girls Basketball Guard McCartney became the 4th player in Lansing program history to score 1,000 career points while competing in the Pete Hyde Holiday Basketball Tournament.  

Boys Swimmer Koch helped Lansing win an IAC Championship, taking the lead in the 200 yard individual medley and 100 yard butterfly. He also competed on the winning 200 yard medley and 200 yard freestyle relay teams.  Overhiser wrestled a perfect 4-0 to win the Division 2, 120 pound weight class at the New York State Wrestling Championships.

The Lansing-based ESPN station partnered with Ehrhart Energy to sponsor the awards, and T-shirts were provided by PSP Unlimited.
