basketball Benedetto 20160212 120Basketball season winded down for the Lansing JV team in their final game against Whitney Point on February 9th.   Coming into this final game, both teams stood at 14-2 and Lansing won both regular season battles but given the IAC by-laws a play-in was required to go to championship.  The Bobcats lost in overtime putting an end to the JV season.  During this game Joe Miller-LaBar topped the points with 25 with additional points by Luke Winslow and Matt Rebera with 10 and 8 respectively.

For the Varsity team, they are hosting sectional play with Elmira Notre-Dame on Tuesday, February 16th.  With a record of 10-9 for the Lansing Bobcats and 9-10 for the END Crusaders, this will be an exciting game.  They last faced off on February 5th at home which was also Senior Night for Tyler Ayers, Zach Detrick, Nate Fleishman, Justin Larkin, Josh Miller-LaBar and Chris Robinson.  While the Bobcats lost 45-50 against END, Zack Walker topped the points at 18 and had 10 rebounds.  Additional points were Josh Miller-LaBar with 11, and more by Detrick, Eastman, Zuidema, and Robinson.  "Hard work pays off" was advice given by Fleishman, while Ayers reminded "Patience is the key to victory".    This advice will be key for the players when they face off with END again next week.

This winter, the Varsity Bobcats won 50-45 against Marathon and 54-37 against Union Springs.    Z^2, (Zach Detrick and Zack Walker) both topped the scoring at 15 points each with Josh Miller-LaBar bringing in 14 in the game against Marathon.  Karsten Zuidema filled out the points in that game.  Ryan Tillotson, Matt Tebbe and Jadan Burke were the high scorers for Marathon.

In late January the Bobcats faced off again with the Trumansburg Raiders with Z^2 again bringing in the most points for the Bobcats:  Detrick with 14 and Walker with 13.  Eric Eastman, Josh Miller-LaBar, Nate Fleishman, and Chris Robinson all contributed to the Bobcats final 41 point score.  While the Bobcats were ahead 23-17 at half time, during the second half the Raiders had ample opportunity to surge ahead for the win.  Austin Grunder, who as a junior in Trumansburg recently passed his 1,000 point career was the Raiders top scorer with 24 points, followed by Luke Richards with 14.  For the JV Bobcats, Joe Miller-Labar (with 17) and Mason Boothe (with 12) topped the scoring.

"We practice free throws all season long for just these kinds of situations, and I knew I had to make them both to secure the win," he said.  Detrick topped the scoring for the Bobcats at 21 which included five 3-point shots.  Josh Miller-LaBar had 16 total points, with additional points by Walker, Eastman, Zuidema (who also had 9 rebounds) and Robinson.  Highest scorers for Spencer were Quinn Barry with 17 and Mark Newill with 11.

This week, the Bobcats took on Odessa-Montour for a 58-41 win.   JV players Mason Boothe, Joe Miller-LaBar, Trey McDonald and Luke Winslow were brought up to participate in this Varsity game and all saw time on the court.  Bringing up the JV players allowed brothers Josh and Joe Miller-LaBar and Tanner and Luke Winslow to play together in this game.  Josh Miller-LaBar topped the game points with 21, Detrick with 13.   Zuidema, Luke Winslow, Walker, Fleishman contributed.

Junior Tanner Winslow (Guard) was inducted in to National Honor Society last week.   He was welcomed into NHS by Varsity Captain Zach Detrick, an existing member of NHS, based upon his demonstration of NHS four pillars of Scholarship, Character, Leadership and Service.  Senior Chris Robinson (Center), also a member of NHS, spoke about character at the ceremony recognizing the inductees for always striving to do what is right regardless of who is watching and encouraging them to continue to make a difference.  The National Honor Society is more than just an honor roll.  All three of these Varsity players have worked to maintain not only a high GPA of 90 or above, but have done community service, held positions of leadership and demonstrated valued character attributes of cooperation, honesty, integrity, reliability, courtesy and a positive attitude.

To the team, Chris Robinson gives this advice: "Go 110% in everything you do."
