Last Saturday (8/6) The Boys Varsity Soccer team and the Girls Varsity Swimming and Diving teams were busily working as teams, but not playing their sports. They were raising money to help pay for equipment they need during the year. Coach Adam Heck's team had a chicken barbecue at the town hall parking lot, with parents and team mates cooking chicken and selling it under a tent they had set up.
Coach Dianne Hicks-Hughes swim team had a suitably wet activity, washing cars at the school bus garage. They were working to raise money for bathing suits and caps. Co-captains Kiki Griff and Caitlin Wright organized the car wash with the rest of the team on only a week. The team had a dish to pass dinner at Myers park the previous evening. "That was a get-together for parents and kids to kick off the season," said Assistant Coach/Diving Coach, Nancie Tengie.
Three girls held signs along route 34 to draw customers in to the bus garage. The rest of the team virtually attacked cars with enthusiasm, hoses, buckets and wash cloths, making them sparkling clean. Ms. Tengie watched over the procedure. Some parents came to contribute checks to the effort.
The soccer season began at the end of August with games against Trumansburg and Waverly. The swim team begins their season with the Harvest Relays on September 6. Six schools will come to Lansing to compete.
