y_pizzaOn Saturday, August 11th, the YMCA of Ithaca & Tompkins County hosted its first ever PizzaPOLLooza! Members and Non-members alike were able to sample pizza from 17 participating pizzerias from Ithaca and surrounding areas.

The pizza parlors showed up in style—providing delectable and diverse slices for every taste imaginable. There were “Grandma Pies” with homemade mozzarella made in-house from Bambino’s Bistro; golden deep-dish delights from The Nines; Mexican-style slices with fresh avocado from Pizza Aroma; a fusion Philly Cheese Steak pie from Domino’s; focaccia bases topped with garden tomatoes from Ciao!; and  gooey, bacon-loaded bites from The Connection. But it was local favorite, Ned’s Pizza, which hit the home-run of the day—they swept first place in all three categories according to the taste-testers: Best Sauce, Best Crust and Best Overall Slice.

histclothing_120The Lansing Historical Association opened an exhibit Monday of 19th Century Clothing and Accessories that were worn by Lansing people.  The stunning display features wedding dresses, a maternity dress, a baby waist, swim suit and other clothing of the era, sewing tools and accessories including eye glasses, as well as photographs taken from the Lansing Historical Archive showing Lansing people in the garb of the day.

"It all started because we had this wedding dress I had heard about," says Fannie Welch, who created the exhibit.  "It was in a suitcase, and it needed work.  She had another box and I found some more stuff.  A week and a half ago I met a girl from Hershey, PA who was a native here.  I mentioned we were going to have this show, and she said, Would you like my grandmother's wedding dress?"

"I'm happy that we have a little something new," says festival chairwoman Karen Veaner.  "We have a lot of favorites back.  We have craft vendors and food vendors.  I encourage people who have ideas for things they would like to see at the festival to contact us, and the Lansing Community Council is also looking for new members."

foodandwine120Assuming that you’re a faithful reader of this column, you will have recently learned that eating blueberries with milk will limit the health benefits of the berries but that cooking or freezing them will not.

This week I’d like to broaden the focus and briefly discuss the health benefits of blueberries, along with raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries.

posticon Community Center Getting Face Lift

communitycenter_extWhen the Lansing Community Center reopens it will sport a renovated kitchen, a more attractive main room, expanded storage, and a new coat of paint.  Building Inspector Lynn Day is heading up the $15,000 project, doing much of the work himself.  Lansing Supervisor Kathy Miller says that the face lift will provide a more usable space for community groups, the Lansing Drop-in Center, and exercise classes, freeing space in the Town Hall for municipal meetings.

"Exercise classes are during the day and frequently at times when we need the courtroom for meetings," Miller says.  "I've already heard from people that when it's done they are going to use it more.  They're looking forward to having something they can use, especially the kitchen.  So I think it's well worth doing."

"What is here is not too complicated," says Ithaca Y CEO Frank Towner.  "If we can get kids outside we think it improves their health, it improves their mental state, spirit, mind, and body."

spca120The SPCA of Tompkins County announced that The John T. and Jane A. Wiederhold Foundation approved a grant for $40,000 for extensive repairs to animal holding areas in The Dorothy and Roy Park Pet Adoption Center.

Jim Bouderau, executive director, states: “The most important and most noticeable work will be done in our dog wing. Current materials are not holding up to the daily wear and tear of our cleaning protocols – there are numerous holes, window frames are becoming rusted and detached from disintegrated walls, and the water damage caused by the seepage into the walls would have eventually created unhealthy and unsanitary conditions.”
