Lansing Farmer's Market was sweeter, by far, than usual two weeks ago. That's because children were selling about 20 different baked items that they had made themselves, including 6 inch chocolate chip, chocolate chip walnut and oatmeal raison cookies, sticky bun coffee cakes, cheese cake cookies with cherries, and yeast bread, among others. The goodies came from this summer's cooking camp, but the proceeds went to fight childhood hunger that effects over 12 million children in the United States."Every year I try to raise money for The Great American Bake Sale," says Marion Cardwell-Ferrer. "Last year I used part of the proceeds from my wedding cakes. This year I thought it would be fun to get the kids involved. We had camp Monday through Friday. We prepped all the items for Saturday and sold them at the Lansing Farmers Market."

Out with the old, in with the new. That's what it seemed would happen when the Myers Park Playground Project (MP3) came along. Over the years the old playground equipment had worn away, or new safety standards declared them unsafe. But Park Superintendent Steve Colt started getting calls from people who had fond memories of the old equipment.
If you think building a house is hard, try rebuilding one with no money, tools, or materials! That was the challenge the Town of Lansing faced when former Councilman Bud Shattuck started his campaign to save Lansing's (an Tompkins and Cayuga Counties) oldest log cabin. The first phase was rescuing it from the Cayuga Museum in Auburn, which had no further use for it. That was Shattuck's piece. Next Ed LaVigne and the Lansing Community Council raised the money to get the cabin reassembled in Myers Park. The last piece is the chinking (the mudding that insulates between the logs), the doors, and the windows. Enter Carl Coté and Results Renovation and Repair, who are donating their time and skills to the project. Last weekend the chinking on the cabin exterior was completed.
It's hard to believe but this issue marks the Lansing Star Online's fifth anniversary. Karen and I published our first issue on July 22, 2005. The top story was about the Town Board considering a domestic partner policy for employees who are part of same-sex couples.
The "2nd Annual Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway of Valor Tribute Ride", formed up in Marvin Park in Owego beginning at 7am on Saturday, July 17th. Three hundred and sixty motorcycles of every color and every make, plus cars, trucks and military vehicles left the park at 10am bound for Groton on Route 38. They arrived in Groton around 11am where they stopped for gas, food and to pay tribute to 2nd Lieutenant Terrance Graves, USMC, a posthumously awarded recipient of the Metal Of Honor for his action in the Vietnam War.
