posticon Healing Well: Controll Issues Part 2

Healing WellHealing WellKnowing how to let go of any unhealthy habit is a key component to living a well balanced life. If you are someone who has control issues, you need to reshape the way you deal with everyday situations as well as stressful ones. In a similar manner, you will need to readdress how you deal with individuals both in the workplace and at home. Finding the right technique that enables you to free yourself from control issues will allow you to improve you personal self-esteem and accept personal responsibility for your own thoughts, words, and actions.

As with any imbalance in life, you need to recognize the stressors that set off dysfunctional behavior. The desire to control all events and individuals in life may originate with the need to have complete control, change, fix, rescue, advise, or correct a situation you deem in need of repair (whether it actually needs repair or not). This desire to make right any situation will have dire consequence as tension will increase along with anxiety, and other unhealthy side effects.

Mark S. LewisMark S. LewisOver the past two years, Lansing school and community members engaged in a thorough review of the current district physical plant with the goal of developing a comprehensive list of renovation and instructional space needs for consideration by the district’s voters. The review tallied a list of items in excess of $70 million. By early 2006 that list was cut to approximately $38 million.

That figure, however, served to be well above what the Lansing community could or would support. This became clear at a February 2006 public meeting during which community members exhorted the board of education to complete a second review process with the goal of presenting a proposal for voter consideration that contained only those renovation and expansion items that it felt were absolutely necessary to address building deterioration, upgrade essential infrastructure components, and address classroom space needs.

It might be unusual for a dog to actually want to go to the kennel, but that has always been normal at The Boarding Barn.  The North Lansing facility has been a fixture for years where you can safely leave your pet while you travel.  The business recently passed a milestone when it was sold along with the accompanying veterinary practice and rental apartments.  "The customers were wonderful," says Joyce Rendano, who ran the business for 23 years.  "I think that's the part I'm going to miss the most."

posticon Healing Well: Control Issues Part 1

Healing WellHealing WellHave you ever been at a gathering or event and watched as another person or group of people spoke or acted inappropriately. Perhaps you might have been to a family dinner or attended a community meeting and witnessed something incredibly unbelievable. A certain individual’s words or actions might have caused shock, alarm, or evoked some response like, “That person is out of control. He/she needs to get a grip!”

Most of us possess a certain amount of self-control that serves as a guide to our thoughts, words, and actions. This built in mechanism serves an important function to protect us, both verbally and physically, from harming ourselves and possibly others around us. We rely on this at times when our judgment may be impaired, such as stressful situations or at times when circumstances demand an immediate decision. It is at these times when being in control is of great benefit.

Perhaps the greatest challenge in fending off anger is implementing a plan. When a situation arises that instills in us a feeling of anger, we ought to confront it with a plan of action. Confronting the issue that stimulates the anger is an important part of anger management.

One of the techniques you can use to tame the anger is guided imagery. This technique, which allows the mind to influence the body, is remarkably effective in treating anger as well as stress and depression. Advocates of guided imagery contend that the imagination is a powerful source of healing. The power of the mind to influence the body is rather remarkable. Although it isn’t always a way to cure an illness or “fix every situation” it plays a vital role in anger management.

A heartfelt note of thanks goes out from the Lansing Central School District Board of Education and administration for hosting a capital project presentation at its January 15th meeting. The discussion was constructive and enlightening for both the school officials and the Lions, who could not have been more cordial and welcoming. The dinner was great as well! Let’s all get behind the Lions’ plan to construct a band stand at Myers Park. You can find more information regarding this project as well as the many other worthwhile Lions Club activities by visiting the club’s website: http://lansing-lions.com/.

posticon A Lansing Family Celebrates Clarence Benson's 90th Birthday

The dining room at Woodsedge was jammed Sunday as the Benson clan gathered to celebrate Clarence Benson's 90th birthday.  Close family and extended family filled the room as they helped Benson celebrate with ice cream and a cake made to look like the family farm.  Unlike the real farm, which grew from just over 200 acres 60 years ago to about 1,000 acres today, the acreage on the cake diminished quickly as the afternoon progressed.  "I married a farmer," said Benson's wife Mary.  "I assumed I'd be a farmer's wife, and that's what I've been for 63 years."
