posticon Simple Solution, Nutricious Meals

Print Print

The school meals program has a problem. They are operating in the red because they don't sell enough lunches to qualify for enough state and federal aid to both keep prices down and pay for the program. They don't sell enough meals, because too many students are buying their meals à la carte. The à la carte meals don't have the three approved items that are required to count as a meal for reimbursement purposes.

SMART TALKSMART TALKSMART TALK

By Dr. Verbos Metikulos

ADVANCE PLANNING:  The Institute for the Linguistically Impaired is asking for donations for our proposed Edwin Newman Clinic for Temporal Retentives.  Temporal retentives are the pitiful host, many of whom hold public office, with a compulsion to be redundant about time.  They blather about what happened in the past, when they first started.  They still remember their advance planning.  Just recently, they referred back to past history.  Please help.

Lansing's Advice Column

Dear IMO,

A good friend of mine is married to a real loser.  He treats her terribly and often ignores her needs.  There entire married life, almost ten years, has been centered on him and his needs.  She often confides in me and asks my opinion on the various escapades in her life. Most recently, she asked him if they could discuss the possibility of starting a family.  He ignored her.  He told her he was busy watching his show, and they could discuss the matter later.  I was so irate that I told her to leave him.  As usual, she defended his selfish and self-centered ways saying he would come around one day.

posticon North Lansing Resident Checks on "His" Gun

What prompts an 80 year old man to embark on a long, hot,  clear-across-the-country journey to look at one particular gun among 6,500  others?

According to the former owner of that particular gun, retired film maker Grey T. Larison of Auburn Road in North Lansing,  "That gun was a very special one, made just for me by Ithaca Gun in 1964.  I donated it to the Cody Firearms Museum in the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming, because they didn't have much in the way of Ithaca Guns when we last visited in 1994.  I figured mine would be the best example of an Ithaca Gun they'd ever get and I wanted the best to be with the best!"

posticon Busy Myers Park

Myers Park has been busy all summer. Pavilions are rented months in advance, as are camp sites. The concessions stand has been well run this year with the contract holder providing good food and service and keeping the area clean.

The concert series went well, but the program is requesting to move back to Thursday nights next year. Audiences were low on Sundays as park-goers came at that time for different activities. Park Superintendent Steve Colt felt that people listened from the different areas in the park, but did not congregate around the performers. He noted it is easier to get bands to play on a week night, because they are often booked on the weekends.

posticon Budget Boost for Lansing Youth Jobs

Print Print

The Lansing Town Board held a public hearing on whether to grant Lansing Youth Services an additional $1,300 for their 2005 budget. Last month Program Manager Micaela Cook asked for the funding to make up for a shortfall caused by a rise in the minimum wage. At that time she outlined the many successes the program has achieved this year.

Lansing Youth Employment Coordinator Dawn Kleeschulte appealed to the board in the public hearing, noting the funding is needed to pay for youth jobs. In 2004 $7,825 was spent to employ 36 young people, all in their first jobs. In 2005 $7,889 was allocated which equals 1,531 hours of youth employment at the old minimum wage of $5.15 per hour, but only 1,341 hours at the new $6.00 rate.
