Our nation's economy is in a crisis of a severity not seen since the Great Depression. In the face of this crisis, we at the U.S. General Services Administration look forward to being a part of the solution.

We can help get people back to work.

We can help stimulate the economy by getting money flowing to the building industries - to construction workers, electricians, plumbers, air conditioning mechanics, carpenters, architects, engineers, etc.

ImageThe Chamber of Commerce Economic Summit offered a few rays of light in the darkness of the current economic downturn.  But the short term prospects seemed bleak, despite the unique economy in Tompkins County.  The summit attracted legislators and business people anxious to know what the prospects are for business in Tompkins County.  Speakers included New York State Business Council of New York State Director of Federal Affairs Maggie Moree, Professor and Chair of the Department of Economics at Ithaca College Elia Kacapyr, and President of Tompkins County Area Development Michael Stamm.

"The challenge for all of us is that the economy in Tompkins County doesn't operate separate and apart from the neighboring counties, separate and apart from the State, the nation, and the world," Moree warned.

ImageLeaders of the County’s Strategic Tourism Planning Board (STPB) today urged that the County Legislature not seek to change the state law governing use of county room tax funds and to continue to designate the funds exclusively for uses that foster activity supporting county tourism.

The Legislature’s Planning, Development and Environmental Quality Committee invited input from the advisory board, as it begins to review a proposal submitted by Legislator Mike Hattery, which would seek a change in the state law to permit the funds to also be used for economic development not related to tourism.

ImageIthaca, N.Y. (Jan. 5, 2009)—Judging by web traffic and advance hotel bookings, Ithaca’s Winter Recess teachers festival, Feb. 13-22, remains on target to double in size this year. The forecast comes despite adverse economic conditions that are curtailing tourism nationwide.

Traffic to the event website, IthacaLovesTeachers.com, skyrocketed in December, with total page views climbing 98 percent over the prior year. In addition, teachers have already started reserving rooms, a positive indicator for a winter event that typically draws last-minute bookings.

President-elect Barack Obama recently announced an economic recovery plan that includes a massive effort to make public buildings more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

This news was well received at the U.S. General Services Administration, known by many as the federal government’s landlord. In fact, GSA is one of the largest public real estate organizations in the world, with an inventory of nearly 9,000 assets with more than 354 million square feet of rentable space across all 50 states, six U.S. Territories, and the District of Columbia.  We serve more than 1 million Federal employees more than 60 agencies. Our portfolio consists primarily of office buildings, courthouses, laboratories, border stations, and warehouses.
