ride 120If you have to get around Ithaca and haven't memorized the TCAT (Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit) schedule there is still hope.  14850.com, a local online magazine, now offers a free app for iOS devices that provides a handy aid to navigating the system.  Ride14850 works on iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches.  The app was written by David Kornreich, an Ithaca College visiting professor.

"I discovered that if I was on the bus or waiting at the bus stop, and wasn't online, there was no way to figure out my route," Kornreich says. "I wrote the app for myself, and then realized other people might find it useful.

townhall 120Andy Sciarabba told the Lansing Town Board Wednesday that the northeast portion of the 140+ acre land targeted for a town center would be perfect for a business and technology park.  Sciarabba proposed that the Town develop the infrastructure for the project, recouping its investment as businesses move in to lease or by lots there.  he said that having a shovel ready business park will give Lansing a competitive edge in attracting business to the Town.

"The Town would be the developer," Sciarabba said.  "It would eventually recoup its investment in the sale of the lots and leasing of the lots."

posticon Supermarket Gives Town Center Traction

tc green120Wednesday morning a crowd gathered to celebrate the opening of Lansing Market. It's been over 15 years since the town had its own supermarket, and this one is a labor of love by Lansing people starting with Andy Sciarabba and his group of investors, almost all of them from Lansing. Lansing contractors Doug Dake and Doug Boles headed up the construction, and the store is embedded in the community in many ways including carrying local products, supporting local projects, and providing 55 new jobs in the town. But this is only the beginning of what town movers and shakers hope will become a vibrant town center.

"This is the anchor," Sciarabba says. "It's going to go from here to Rogue's Harbor. There will be a lot of in-fill of housing, professional offices, smaller businesses, coffee shops. That's what we want to make for Lansing that we sorely miss, I think. We're a very vibrant community, but we don't have a town center. It will be nice to see it happen."

posticon Reading Books From the Cloud

kindlecloud_120Last October I reviewed four or five e-reader apps for the iPad and decided the Amazon Kindle reader app was the best.  It was a close race, because the iBooks reader is very good, but the iBooks store was terrible compared to Amazon's.  This summer Apple changed the rules in their app store, demanding 30% of all sales made from within apps, and on July 11th Amazon removed the Amazon Store button from their iPad Kindle app.

This week Amazon quietly launched a Kindle reader for a new platform: the World Wide Web.  And the company made sure that this reader, accessible from selected Web browsers (Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Mobile Safari -- Amazon says other browsers will be supported soon), is optimized for... you guessed it... the iPad.  Because it is a Web-based app and not downloadable from the App Store, the Kindle Cloud Reader brings back the Amazon Store button, only weeks after Apple forced Amazon to remove it from the native iPad app.  To add insult to injury, they optimized the 'Kindle Cloud' version of the app that runs on iPad's Safari browser for the iPad.  In other words, the Amazon store on the iPad is an even better experience for readers than it was when the iPad app could have a store button.  More or less leaving the iBooks store in the dust for usability and shopping experience.
