Dr. Mackenzie has served as the Cayuga Medical Center’s President and CEO for over seven years and has been an advocate for the hospital’s advancement and superior patient care.

“As PRI's closest neighbor, it's been my pleasure to watch it grow to national stature with superb collections, a spectacular museum, strong education programs – and most of all, great people,” stated Dr. Mackenzie. “In a time of environmental challenge, I believe PRI’s strong science grounding will be critical to well-informed debate. posticon Tops Awards $876,200 In Scholarships

ImageWilliamsville, NY - Tops Friendly Markets announced that it has awarded $876,200 dollars to 772 Tops first-year and matriculated college associates, associate dependents and associate grandchildren for the 2010-2011 academic year. Since the start of the scholarship program in 1989, Tops has awarded $12,585,050 dollars to over 10,000 recipients.

“Each year, we are pleased to work with our Union partners to award Tops associates, their dependents and their grandchildren with college scholarships” said Frank Curci, president and CEO of Tops Markets.   “We proudly support all associates and associates' family members who choose to further their education by providing funding toward all four years of their educational journey.”

ImageCayuga Radio Group has received two awards in the New York State Broadcasters Association 44th Annual Awards for Excellence in Broadcasting competition, in the categories of Best Public Service Announcement/Campaign and Best Local Interactive Sales Campaign.

Cayuga Radio Group won for Best Public Service Announcement/Campaign for their series of Public Service Announcements supporting the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program at Beverly J. Martin Elementary. Susan Johnston, General Manager of Cayuga Radio Group, said, “We would like to thank Amie Hamlin and the students at Beverly J. Martin, for their enthusiasm and participation in creating these PSA’s. I would also like to recognize Jason Kester for writing and producing the spots.”

ImageCampbell Soup Supply Company, LLC has issued a voluntary recall of three varieties of SpaghettiOs with meatballs due to the possibility of under processing.  The SpaghettiOs products were recalled after a routine inspection and subsequent investigation of the soup company’s Paris, Texas production warehouse.  As part of the manufacturer’s voluntary recall of over 15,000,000 pounds of product, three varieties of SpaghettiOs with meatballs have been taken off store shelves.

Recalled items include SpaghettiOs with meatballs, 14.75 oz – 5100002526, SpaghettiOs A to Z with meatballs, 14.75 oz - 5100014319, and SpaghettiOs fun shapes with meatballs (cars), 14.75 oz. – 5100015445.  The products subject to recall are stamped with the establishment number "EST 4K," as well as a "Use By" date between June 2010 and December 2011 ink-jetted on the bottom of each can. These products were manufactured between December 2008 and June 2010 and distributed to retail establishments nationwide.

ImageThe Tompkins County Workers' Center and one of its leadership groups, the Community Union Organizers, announces the formation of a weekly support group to meet every Thursday from 4:30-6 p.m. to support, advocate for, and empower unemployed and underemployed workers. Recognizing some of the unemployment and under-employment problems troubling many of our community members has led to this participant-driven weekly support meeting for unemployed and under-employed workers.

ImageWells College today announced that Robert J. Ellis will direct its new center for business and entrepreneurship in the liberal arts. The center is the College’s newest academic addition, and is the first step toward the College adding a dedicated business major to its listings.

Ellis, of Cortland, N.Y., brings a unique combination of academic talents and business skills to Wells. Most recently a financial services strategic consultant, Ellis has an extensive background in retail sales and marketing of financial products and services. He also has experience in the fields of banking, brokerage, asset management and insurance, and he has taught undergraduate classes in small business management, financial services management, principles of electronic commerce, and federal taxation. Ellis earned his B.B.A. degree from the University of Michigan, and his M.B.A from the Harvard Business School. An author of fiction and an avid traveler, Ellis brings an appreciation of the liberal arts’ focus on experiential learning and broad educational foundations.

ImageITHACA - SewGreen is moving its reuse store and sewing school to side-by-side storefronts in Ithaca's historic Clinton Hall. The new location, at 112 North Cayuga Street, will consolidate the organization's programs in a larger and more accessible space.

SewGreen collects unwanted fabric, yarn, and sewing machines for reuse. The not-for-profit group also teaches basic sewing to all ages and hosts a youth jobs program in the summer. Last November it opened a volunteer-run resale store in the DeWitt Mall, and for the last two years has held sewing classes in the nearby Women's Community Building.

ImageAutumn Leaves Used Books owner Joe Wetmore was the recipient of Alternatives Federal Credit Union’s annual Jeff Furman Award for Social Responsibility.   The award was presented to Wetmore at Alternatives’ Annual Meeting on June 2.

The Jeff Furman Award is presented annually to an Alternatives member business that exemplifies social responsibility in business. It’s named after Alternatives member and community activist Jeff Furman for his long and illustrious career promoting social responsibility in business. One member of the selection committee said, “While there were several deserving nominations, Joe rose to the top of the nominees because of his lifetime achievement.”

ImageWilliamsville, NY – Produce managers from Tops Friendly Markets’ 131 stores in New York and Pennsylvania rolled up their sleeves yesterday and hit the field to learn first-hand about the locally grown produce that is sold in all Tops stores. At the same time, the managers had an opportunity to speak with Matt Morgan, New York State Deputy Agriculture Commissioner, and Betsy Bihn, senior extension associate in the food science department of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY about produce, locally grown products, food safety and other, current agricultural issues. 

“Our customers want to be confident that their produce is fresh, safe and locally grown,” said Tops Friendly Markets President and CEO Frank Curci. “Having Deputy Commissioner Morgan and Ms. Bihn available to speak with our produce team and answer their questions will undoubtedly help Tops associates educate our consumers.”
