A Broadway actor, an acclaimed author and a bevy of beloved local musicians will visit the Tompkins County Public Library this fall in celebration of this year’s Community Read of The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.Programs planned in conjunction with the 8th Annual Community Read include book discussion groups, a literary discussion by author Philipp Meyer, a theatrical performance by stage actor Anthony Newfield and a musical performance by Johnny Russo and friends .





The Hangar Theatre’s artistic director Peter Flynn today announced the Hangar’s 36th season, which will open in the fully renovated facility in 2010. The Hangar will present a current Broadway hit; a world premiere new work; a classic American musical; August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize winning play; and a quirky family musical comedy.
In the high stakes world of medical research there are many players and many agendas. When early career cancer researcher William Shumway’s work shows startling promise, the first to pounce is Dr. Robert Brock. His offer of a fully funded lab, move to New York City and the “best cancer research center in the country” thrusts Shumway into a world of politics and science.
The wildly warm-hearted musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood, based on Charles Dickens’ famous unfinished novel, comes to the Hangar stage Thursday, August 13 through Saturday, August 15 with performances at 10:00 a.m and 12:00 p.m. each day. 
Running to Places, the non-profit theatre company for youth across Tompkins County, presents the explosive rock musical: “Footloose!” Fifty of the most talented teen performers from every corner of the region bring this classic 80’s flick to life onstage at The State Theatre of Ithaca for one weekend only, August 14-16, Friday and Saturday at 7pm, Sunday at 2pm.

"The pirates, the pirates - oh, despair!" The CRS Barn Studio proudly presents W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance, or, The Slave of Duty, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, August 20-22, 2009 at 7:30pm. Steven Stull directs this lively and engaging new production, with choreography by Jeanne Goddard.
