A CONFIRM:  So you thought the directions to your made-in-Asia appliance were bad?  Institute for the Linguistically Impaired therapist Soto Voce thought so, too, until he bought an Italian leather jacket.  He was proud to own some craftsmanship from the old country, until he read the card he found in a pocket:

"The real calf leather, in order to maintain its characteristics, has to be protected against the raindrops, and treatment can warrant it for spots caused by water or sweat.  The veinings are a confirm of the naturalness of this leather."

Dr. Voce showed me this card one evening in the Fowler Lounge, one Italian to another.  "So much for China bashing," he blushed.

ImageThe Hangar Theatre’s artistic director Peter Flynn today announced the Hangar’s 36th season, which will open in the fully renovated facility in 2010.  The Hangar will present a current Broadway hit; a world premiere new work; a classic American musical; August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize winning play; and a quirky family musical comedy.

The current Broadway farce is the theatrical tour-de-force—Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps; the Hangar Theater has commissioned Kenny Finkle to write Penelope of Ithaca in honor of the opening of the renovated space; the classic American musical is Man of La Mancha, a nod to the production that opened the Hangar Theatre’s doors 35 years ago; August Wilson’s award-winning drama is The Piano Lesson beginning the Hangar’s presentation of Mr. Wilson’s Century Cycle: ten plays chronicling the African-American experience through the 20th century; and the charming family musical comedy is The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

ImageIn the high stakes world of medical research there are many players and many agendas. When early career cancer researcher William Shumway’s work shows startling promise, the first to pounce is Dr. Robert Brock. His offer of a fully funded lab, move to New York City and the “best cancer research center in the country” thrusts Shumway into a world of politics and science.

It’s a complicated business. Brock is at the top of his game as he fills the coffers to support the cutting-edge researchers he gathers from around the world. Older colleagues, like the venerable Saul Roth may get swept away in the tide when the latest, the newest, the most brilliant young minds are being cultivated by Brock. Mix in a smart, young, female Harvard undergraduate, Alice Curiton, with a passion for science, and the world of Secret Order comes alive. What will one risk for recognition? How many adjustments to the protocol before you throw in the towel? When does the fervor for an absolute proof get polluted with the desire for total ambition?

by Dr. Molto Breve

COMPLETELY SURROUNDED:  The Institute for the Linguistically Impaired treats competion compulsives, who say complete monopoly or completely destroyed, in the William Safire Center.

However, we sometimes uncover a basic conceptual problem that appears to be related to cerebroporosis.  Patients may say an island surrounded by water.  This isn't completion compulsion.  Nor is three-sided leanto.  They just don't seem to be listening to themselves.

How sad to lead such oblivious lives.

ImageAs a result of strong early ticket sales to Rent, the Hangar Theatre announces that the run will be extended, with two additional performances on Sunday, August 23.   The Hangar Theatre is one of the first regional theatres in the country this year to get the rights to produce the Broadway bohemian rock musical Rent.  This much-loved musical comes to the Hangar stage on the heels of one of the longest runs in Broadway history, and will close the Hangar Theatre’s 2009 season, performing August 6 through 23.

Rent is the story of a community of young artists struggling to make their mark in New York’s rapidly changing East Village of the 1990s. This life-affirming musical celebrates solidarity and love in the most desperate of circumstances.
