posticon Lansing Varsity Fall Sports Rundown

School may have waited until after labor Day, but Lansing's varsity players have been preparing for the Fall season since August 13.  The season is already underway with wins in football, and boys and girls soccer.  Athletic Director Ed Redmond says all the Lansing teams have a strong season to look forward to in soccer, football, volleyball, swimming and track.  With only one loss for the season so far, Lansing competes in IAC Division 1 this year.  "That's one thing about sports that I think is so valuable is that kids learn how to be successful, or not successful and deal with it," he says.  "Winning is something that once kids figure out and confident they can pretty much win in anything because they believe they can win and work hard at it, it doesn't matter what the sport or what it is in life."

Redmond is coaching the boys football team this Fall.  He coached football for 13 years before Start Dean took over three years ago.  He is back as coach this year, and his team started the season last week with a 35 to 0 win over Newark Valley.  His son Vincent is quarterback, and he says it is a strong team of 22 players this year.  "It was a good win," he says.  "We're hopeful to keep building on something positive.  It's always easier to build on something positive than something negative, so we feel like we got off to a good start and we've had a good week to practice."

ImageIt's August, and that means Lansing Recreation Department's Soccer Camp is next week.  Monday is a milestone for the camp, starting it's 10th year.  "Every year it's grown," says camp director Adam Heck.  "We hit a plateau, but we are trying to accommodate even more kids.  So we're promoting it even more.  We've sent flyers out through our community, and to the local soccer clubs to try to get more kids."

The $90 fee includes five days of camp from 8:30 to 4:30 each day, plus a ball and T-shirt.  Offensive and defensive skills are taught, then put to use in games, and guest lecturers are scheduled from all levels of soccer, including male and female coaches and players.  The camp is for boys and girls entering grades 4 through 9.  Heck says those entering 3rd grade will be accepted if their parents think they are ready.  "If a parent thinks a 3rd grader can do it, we recommend it," he says.  "That's the parent's call, because it is a long day."

ImageThis Monday will begin a week of activity in the Lansing high school and middle school gymnasiums, as Lansing Recreation Department's sixth annual basketball camp begins.  The camp will teach 4th through 9th graders the fundamentals of basketball in a positive atmosphere.  "It's a great camp," says camp director Adam Heck.  "They get a shirt, they get a ball, and it's a whole week of basketball.  We're trying to get as many kids interested in basketball as possible."

Heck, who coaches Lansing's Boys Varsity Basketball, works at many basketball camps around the northeast.  He has worked for 13 years at Pensylvannia's Frostburg State University basketball camp, which typically attracts 600 campers, as well as Cortland State's camp, among others.  "I've learned from those guys how to run camps," he says.  "We're always looking for more kids.  We'll even take kids into camp who walk in.  It's not expensive, we're not about making a lot of money.  We're trying to promote basketball."

ImageOne of New York's biggest sporting events of the year is coming up at the end of this month when the 2007 Empire State Games are held in Westchester County July 25th through 29th.  Lansing's Adam Heck is coaching the Scholastic Central boys team for the second year in a row along with Groton's John D'Antonio.  The Central region team is recruited from Syracuse, Watertown, Utica, Oneonta, Cortland, Ithaca, Binghamton, and Elmira.  "It's a huge area, and we take the top 20 kids," says Heck.  "From there 16 get to go to the game, and Walker Diebolt is one of the 16.  Dan Hranek, a Lansing Senior, is an alternate.  It is certainly a great honor for our local kids."

Players were chosen by Heck, D'Antonio, and coaches throughout the region in four tryouts at Colgate University in Halmilton, one in Binghamton, one at Syracuse, and one at Ithaca.  The tryouts are spread throughout the region to make it easier for players to  attend.  They can try out as many times as they want, and the top 30 to 40 are called back to a final tryout at Cortland State.

This year's Lyle Crandall Memorial Baseball Tournament would have been held last week, but Lansing's Recreation Director Steve Colt says it had to be canceled because there weren't enough teams to fill it.  "All our field logistics were done, schedules were made, the program was done," Colt told the Town Board at their Wednesday meeting. " We're in the process of writing letters and returning payments to our generous donors.  Trophies had been ordered.  Prizes for our home run derby had been ordered.  We had to back down on a lot of things.  We waited until the last minute to try to pull it off, but the teams weren't there."

The county’s Government Operations Committee today refrained from making any recommendation to change county policy on county release of assessment data over the internet.

Most members concluded that there are too many unanswered questions regarding potential privacy concerns for them to recommend at this time that the Assessment Department’s ImageMate online database be changed from the current two-tier system, providing limited access by the public to property information, to one that would provide free online access to all.
