Lansing trounced Union Springs in a track meet Tuesday night, with Lansing girls scoring 123 to Union Springs' 15, and Lansing boys winning 89-52.  The meet pitted Dryden against Watkins Glen as well.  "All teams had some very good performances tonight," said Lansing coach Carolyn Ferguson.  "Dryden and Watkins are not in our division so that competition does not count towards our league record.  Lansing will face both Dryden and Watkins in the overall IAC Championships later this month," she explains.

Ferguson reports Lansing's Rusty Landon was a 4 event winner (110H, 400m, 800m, 1600m Relay), Carol Melice was also a 4 event winner (100m, 200m, Pole Vault, 400m Relay).  Melice and Kiki Gifft both broke the facility record in the pole vault.

Gifft previously held the record (10' 1") set at the Lansing Invitational earlier this season.  Both Melice and Gifft vaulted to 10' 6" in the meet.  Melice won the event based on the least amount of missed attempts.

Phil Abbott set a meet record in the 1600m with a time of 4:46.9.  Rusty Landon set a meet record in the 400m with a time of 52.0.  Rusty also finished 4th in the 200m, 5th in the 100m, and 5th in the 110m Hurdles.   On the girls side, Preeti Panda took 5th in the 100m Hurdles, and 5th in the 200m.  Kylee Jordan took 3rd in the 1500m, and 5th in the 800m.

Last Tuesday and Wednesday (4/18 and 4/20) the Lansing Recreation Department ran softball and baseball clinics in cooperation with the respective High School varsity teams.  Around 70 first through sixth graders got to work with the Varsity players decked out in full uniform, and experience what the High School players go through every day.  "It's a day in the life of a Varsity team, scaled back to the size of our young participants," says Lancing Recreation Director Steve Colt.

On Tuesday Katie Mayo brought the Girls Varsity Softball team to coach almost 30 kids, then Wednesday Ed Redmond and the Varsity Boys Baseball team came out to work with about 40 more.  It was a great experience for the younger kids.  "I think they like being around us, because we're on the varsity team," says Varsity Baseball Player David Valesente.  I think they look up to us."  Colt agrees.  "They love it," he says.  "Because to them these are the upper classmen in the varsity uniforms, they're like major leaguers to those kids."

Despite the April snow showers we had the other day, Spring is here and that means Varsity Track & Field, Golf, Tennis, Baseball and Softball.  The season is starting this week for all these sports, with a Track & Field Kick-Start Classic at Lansing on Saturday and games for the other teams.  Athletic Director Ed Redmond says the prospects are good for all the teams.

Track & Field
Carolyn Ferguson and Todd Howell are coaching the boys and girls Track & Field teams.  Events include sprint and distance events that range from 100 meters to 1600 meters, hurdles events, field events like shot put, discus, high jump, long jump, pole vault and triple jump.  Redmond says they'll be doing a steeple chase competition this weekend, where runners jump over barriers.  "We're one of the few schools that offer a steeple chase at our Invite," he says.

You have to get up pretty early in the morning to play football in winter.  7:30am, to be exact.  If you make it to the indoor Field on East Shore Drive at that time you'll find the Lansing Small Fry Indoor Football Winter Training Camp in full swing.  "This is really a recruiting membership drive," says Lansing Recreation Director Steve Colt.  "Hopefully we can expose some kids that always wondered about it, but never tried it.  We want to expose first-timers to the game, show them how much fun it is and show them how safe it is.  It's a great experience."
