posticon Bobcats Back In State Soccer Tournament

soccer1It looked like the Lansing Bobcats Boys Varsity Soccer team was finished for the season.  They had been defeated by Elmira Notre Dame (END) High School's Crusaders, who were slated to challenge Watertown's Immaculate Heart Central team Saturday in Oneanta in the State quarterfinals.  But after Lansing Coach Adam Heck filed a protest END withdrew Wednesday, putting the Bobcats back in the running for the state championship.

In addition to coaching the Bobcats, Heck serves as the IAC boy soccer coordinator and the assistant section IV coordinator.  He said that other Section IV coaches urged him, as coordinator, to file the protest alleging that an ineligible player had participated on the END team throughout the season.  That put Heck in an awkward position, because if END withdrew it would put his own team back into the running.

football1029 12 120#1 Greg LeeIf you were not at Sobus field this past Friday, you missed one of the most exciting, best played, high school football games so far this year.  Two teams that have been battling each other for years, supported strongly by each of their communities, met for what can only be described as combat.

The Watkins Glen Senecas came into Lansing tied with Waverly at the two spot in Division V, with an overall record of five wins and one loss and a division record of two wins and one loss.  If they beat Lansing, they would continue on to the post season, sealing a second place ranking and if Waverly was defeated by Dryden the Senecas earn a spot at the top as division V champions.  If they lose, their season is over and they go home.

football1022 8 120This past Friday night, standing at the top of the Eastern hill, looking down upon the green, grass, grid iron of Sobus Field, the blaze orange sticks, chains and down marker lay on the visitor's side near the forty yard line. A crew from Waverly was setting up a boom camera at the North end, behind the uprights. The volunteer crew was starting to set up the concession stand, readying for a battle of their own. Jeff Neal and his crew from News Radio WEBO were performing a sound check on their broadcasting equipment. Chicken dinners were being sold down the hill. All of these activities and more were taking place to get the field prepped for the battle.

The two teams took the field to run through their pregame warmups, passing lines, linemen hits, and kicking drills. The coaches watching everything, setting up the chess match in their head. A short time later, the Bobcats filed down the hill to meet and finalize the game plan that they have been working on all week. The Waverly Wolverines huddled near the Northwest corner of the field to discuss their game. Fans, family members, photographers, scouts and community members started to fill the bleachers and the hillside. It was almost time.
