football 1015ALast Saturday was an absolutely beautiful fall day, sunny, 60 and clear.  A day that Mother Nature doesn't allow us Northeasterners to get too accustom to this time of year.  At around 11:15 am, twenty six young men marched out of the locker room of the Lansing High school to load the equipment bags into the small gray van.  They then huddled around their Head coach, John Winslow, to listen and learn.  He never raised his voice.  He didn't speak long or lecture.  At no time did he say anything negative or derogatory.  What he did state was that today would not be like last Friday night.  Every game, from today on, they would be playing for the state championship.

The three and one, Lansing Bobcats boarded the bus knowing clearly that their mission today was to be successful, safe and victorious.  Forty one miles to the south, the players from Thomas A. Edison (TAE) were starting to arrive at their school.  The Spartans, with their one and four record, were preparing for battle and their homecoming.

football lg 120The evening started out chilly with clouds and turned damp with strong winds from out of the south.  The Bobcats were on a roll with a season record of 3-0 and just defeated their first divisional opponent, Dryden, last week. The Greene Trojans hadn't won a game yet and were looking to turn their luck around.  The Lansing fans gathered in the stands, along the fence and on the slope.  Greene fans congregated near the fence and in the stands on the west side of the field.  The volunteers were making hot cocoa, hot dogs and other treats in the concession stand.  All was set for Lansing's first home football game of the season.

The game started with a dribbling kickoff from Greene to lineman, #65, Braydon Jackson.  Jackson scooped up the ball and was immediately swarmed by the Trojans.   After gaining only six yards it was three and out for the Bobcats.   Greene had done their homework and came in very prepared to defend against the speedy threat of Lansing's #30.

soccer girls1The Lansing girl’s soccer team improved to 8-3 on the year Wednesday with a solid win against Union Springs.  Lansing controlled most of the play early on, while Union Springs used a well-organized defense to limit Lansing’s scoring chances.

In the 23rd minute, Lansing found a way to break down the Union Springs defense.  Madeline Boerman sent a floating cross from the right corner to the far side of the 6-yard box where Nikki VanOstrand controlled it nicely and struck a low shot to beat the Union Springs keeper.

football 120Last Friday night, when the bus pulled away from the Lansing high school there was massive amount of eagerness, and tension.  The football team knew they were ready and had confidence but, a proper amount of doubt kept them from getting arrogant. The players put in their headphones, starred out the windows, or closed their eyes and went to their 'zone' to think over the game plan and prepare for their first divisional game of the season.  Fourteen miles to the east, Dryden's players were preparing for a must win game, knowing that beating Lansing would be a challenge.

It was another nice evening, clear and 60 with little to no wind.  As you pulled into the parking lot you were greeted by the smells of a bar-b-que and the sounds of a celebration.  Close to 2000 fans gathered for a special event and as you looked into the stands it was a sea of purple, blue and gold.  Everyone was excited for the match between the big cats.  Lansing was undefeated at 3-0 and coming off a bye due to Trumansburg's low numbers.  Dryden was 3-1 and trying to snap back after a hard loss against divisional opponent, Watkin Glen.

bobcatlogoLast Saturday was an absolutely beautiful evening; partly cloudy, 60 degrees, pristine venue, great fans and two well coached football teams.  Coach Winslow and The Lansing Bobcats traveled down to Binghamton Alumni Stadium to battle The Seton Catholic Saints in a week two football game. Both teams came in with their heads held high and a ton of confidence due to week one shutouts.  Lansing thrashed Groton 34-0 and the Saints kenneled the Delaware Academy Bulldogs 22-0.

The Saints defense started off strong, stopping the Cats after seven plays on their first drive of the game.  Lansing's Junior, Kicker/Punter, #2, Jared Strait punted the ball high and to Seton Catholic's 19 yard line. Lansing's defensive backfield denied all of their pass attempts not allowing them to move the ball at all and forcing the Saints to punt.

"They love it, he says.  "And I look forward to this week every summer.  I have family that comes back and coaches, and our house is full of coaches.  We enjoy it and it's a tradition that we've grown to love.  Now my daughters are old enough to go to the half day camp, so it's adding another special element to it."

usafootballLansing Recreation Director Steve Colt told the Town Board Wednesday that the regional league has decided to mandate a nation-wide program of USA Football called 'Heads Up Football'.  The program seeks to certify youth football coaches in safety protocols applied in all aspects of the game so they can teach kids proper techniques so that kids can have fun playing with less chance of getting hurt.

"It's another item we can add to our youth football package to increase safety and show parents that this is the safest level of football you can play," Colt said.
