hocky2_120The Tompkins Girls Hockey Association/Ithaca Shooting Stars had a strong showing with all teams playing in the 3rd Annual Finger Lakes Girls Association (FLAG) Tournament in Lysander on February 28th – March 2nd 2014. Two teams won 1st Place in their division: the 12/14-and-under team and the 19-and-under team.

The 8U team Results: The 8U (House) girls played in a jamboree format (cross-ice games). Most of the girls were participating in their first tournament in their career.

ford120BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bloomsburg University junior Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) has earned Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week honors after playing a key role in helping the Huskies clinch the PSAC East regular season title this week.

Ford posted a tremendous showing during last Wednesday's 66-58 win vs. West Chester in a victory that essentially clinched the No. 1 seed in the East for the Huskies as they leapfrogged WCU at the top of the division. The Lansing, N.Y. native packed the stat sheet by finishing with 17 points, eight rebounds, six assists and a block and also turned in crucial plays down the stretch. Her jumper in the paint as the shot clock expired gave the Huskies a 61-54 lead with 2:12 to play and was a key moment in BU holding off a Golden Rams rally attempt. She then put the game on ice with a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining.

buzzerradioThe Cayuga Radio Group launched a new sports formatted radio station in Ithaca Monday.  98.7 'The Buzzer' hit the airwaves with the CBS Sports Radio line up.  The station features the CBS Sports Radio line up – including the popular Jim Rome Show.

“This is an excellent of expansion of sports radio into the Ithaca Market,” Said VP/GM Chet Osadchey.  “CBS gives us the ability to bring the highest quality sports programming to local radio, with nationally known personalities such as Tiki Barber, Jim Rome, Doug Gottlieb, and many other athletes and personalities that contribute regular segments over the airwaves.

posticon Cobleskill’s Steelman Conference’s Female Co-Swimmer-Of-The-Week

Gansevoort, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced today that SUNY Cobleskill freshman Alex Steelman, Ithaca, N.Y., Lansing High School, has been named the league’s Co-Female Swimmer-of-the-Week for the week ending Sunday February 2, 2014. This marks the second time this season the Ithaca, N.Y. native has been honored by the NEAC with Female Swimmer-of-the-Week honors.

The Fighting Tiger freshman diver won the one-meter diving event posting a score of 212.60 points at the 2014 Skidmore College Women’s Sprint Invitational hosted by Skidmore College on Sunday afternoon at the Thoroughbreds Williamson Sports Center in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Led by Steelman, the Orange & Black posted a team score of 79 points to place fifth overall in a field of six teams at the meet.

posticon Ithaca League Of Women Rollers Announces 2014 Season Dates

rollerderbyIthaca League of Women Rollers announced it is hosting games at Cass Park Rink May through October, with the season opener taking place on May 10.  This is the seventh season for the Ithaca Rollers.

"We're really excited for the 2014 season!” said ILWR super fan Liz Hoyt. “We know our SufferJets and BlueStockings have been working on new tactics all winter and we can't wait to see them put their awesome teamwork into action."

posticon 5 Lansing Bowlers Receive IAC Awards

bowling_120Five Lansing bowlers received awards at the IACs held in Waverly.

The boys team finished 3rd overall with a total pin fall of 2943. Waverly was the winner with 3052.  Cole Quigley led the team and was awarded 2nd place medal for his (240, 207, 279 games 722 series). Tony Paige placed 5th (208, 265, 181 games 654 series) and Brandon Mikula 12th (225, 213, 168 games 605 series). Other Lansing team members, Shane Hradisky (492 series) and Javin Craig (469 series).  The pin count of 1130 was highest rolled in their second game, top for the Tournament.

Niskayuna, NY -- The New York State Scholastic Rowing Association recently announced the high school rowing teams and clubs recognized as Fall 2013 NYSSRA Scholar/Athlete Teams.  Local Students from the Ithaca, Lansing and Whitney Point school districts were among those honored. 

Cascadilla Boat Club’s Varsity Girls and Varsity Boys teams, led by coach Adam Cottrell, earned Scholar/Athlete Team status.  Rowers honored are: Elizabeth Barrett, Julia Barrett, Michaela Brew, Samantha Brown, Abby Cooper, Ellie Cramton, Eleanor Glahn, Rori Henderson, Jacy Hollander, Jessie Liu, Narissa McCarty, Hadley Reine, Megan Wallace, and Katie White;  Jake Barnett‐Hill, Austin Cody, Henry Ellis, Gabriel Falk, Patrick Finley, Matt Kehoe, Isaac Lawson‐Hughes, Jonathan Overton, and Austin Taylor.

jford2Bloomsburg, PA – Bloomsburg University junior Jocelyn Ford (Lansing, NY/Lansing) has earned Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week honors after helping lead the Huskies to a pair of PSAC East victories with stellar showings in both games.

Ford continued her recent tear this week, averaging 20.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 6.0 assists as the Huskies got past East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, 63-51, and then rallied in the second half to win at division-leading West Chester, 88-80, on Saturday.

posticon Ithaca Shooting Stars 12/14-And-Under Team Wins 1st Place

Tompkins Girls Hockey Association/Ithaca Shooting Stars 12/14-and-under team won 1st Place at the Top Gun Tournament hosted by the Amherst Youth Hockey Association on January 17th through the 20th in Amherst NY.

Ithaca's first game was Friday night against Cazenovia Park (a Buffalo-area team) which ended in a 2-1 loss.  Saturday Ithaca played 2 more games, first against the the Amherst Knights, coming from behind to end in a tie 4-4.  The Ithaca girls played again against the Tonawanda Lightning on Saturday evening, solidly winning 3-1.

posticon Kyle Dake Banner Unveiled at Lansing HS

kd_banner120A banner commemorating Kyle Dake's wrestling achievements was unveiled Monday to a cheering crowd in the Lansing high School Gymnasium.  Dake was joined by family, coaches  and fans as current wrestling Assistant Coach John Kotmel read a tribute and showed a video commemorating Dake's high school and college career.

Dake is part of a wrestling dynasty at Lansing.  The wrestling program was started by social studies teacher Bob Dake 50 about years ago.  His son Doug coached the team, including his own sons Kyle and Corey.  Corey made it to States in 2012.  Kyle won the state championship twice under Doug's coaching, before earning his legendary record at Cornell.

posticon Christopher To Be Honored by Bowling Association

leechristopherLansing varsity bowling coach Lee Christopher will receive the Service To Youth Award next May at the NYS USBC Hall of Fame and Awards banquet in Binghamton.  Christopher has been a youth bowling coach for 23 years.

He coached for the Ithaca USBC and is a USBC Level I instructor and Dick Ritger Level 4 coach. He has coordinated a bowling camp for youth from the ages of 8 to 15 since 1997 for the Lansing Recreation program and is in his second year as the coach of the Lansing High School varsity bowling team.

hof_120Three individual athletes and a team joined 72 Lansing athletes and teams December 27 at the 15th annual Lansing Athletic Hall Of Fame induction.  Friends, families and fans filled the Lakewatch Inn as Billie Boles Downs, Lindsey Dean Felling, Carrie Richards McGowan and the 1993 football team were honored.  Coctails and dinner preceded the induction ceremony.

"They are top quality athletes," said Master of Ceremonies Geoff Wright.  "We have inducted 61 individuals and 11 teams.  Tonight we welcome three individuals and one team to the Hall of Fame."
